WTP MIT @ 2016

@yawninglion Congratulations! I hope that you have an amazing time there!

Has anybody gotten an email from admissions yet?

No, they said they’re emailing us on the 28th.

Oh, okay thanks!

I emailed WTP for an early decision because I was accepted to Governor’s School in my state. Cynthia Skier replied and said that they’ll try and give me a application status as early as possible.

Praying for WTP now because I was rejected from all my other programs  They all had lower acceptance rates than WTP, but still.

same @tonystarkofwinterfell  hoping the best for both of us!!

If I don’t get accepted to WTP, I don’t know what I’ll do this summer. I don’t live close to any universities to do research. I guess I could get a job…

ahhh same. good luck you guys! i hope we all get in and can meet each other there

Probably going to get rejected on the basis of having too much experience (if not other things because to be honest I’m pretty sure other people from my high school applied) though  The engineering class that I took last year already taught me basic modeling, so I’d assume they’d rather give a spot to someone who doesn’t have that kind of experience?

Asdf I could have had a position in the same lab I worked in last summer this summer, but I turned it down because I thought I’d get accepted to one of the summer programs I applied to. Now that that seems unlikely, I wish I could take that back

Eek–I just realized I sent them a JPG version of my transcript, not a PDF. Oops.

If accepted into WTP, I only get a half tuition waiver…do you guys think it’s worth it?

Would you enjoy your experience there, @happyalldatime? I’m only receiving a half waiver too, but I think it’s definitely fair for my family’s income, and because a) I have no backup, b) I really really really want to go, and c) it’s about 5 times less expensive than anything else I could do at this point, I’m definitely going if I get in.

@tonystarkofwinterfell My backup is Governor’s School at CMU (which is free), how do you think those two stack up?

@happyalldatime I don’t know how tight your financial situation at home is, but WTP is definitely a one in a lifetime opportunity to learn engineering and connect with other bright students in such a great college environment. I am sure that it will be worth it, and I would definitely go if I were accepted (although I’ll probably get rejected lolz) so yes, definitely go unless you have a much cheaper alternative to WTP, because I honestly think that it’s worth the price

@happyalldatime I don’t live in Pennsylvania so I can’t say anything, but I’d go to whichever program you think you’d enjoy more (unless your home financial situation is such that you really can’t afford it).

@happyalldatime “If accepted into WTP, I only get a half tuition waiver…do you guys think it’s worth it?”

Yes, it is a unique opportunity. If you can possibly afford it, you should definitely go.

DD had a great experience there. She worked hard, learned a lot, made friends that she has stayed in contact with, and met many amazing and talented people, in a very collaborative environment. It is a big opportunity to demonstrate a level of commitment and ability that distinguishes you from most applicants.

The four girls in my daughter’s immediate friend group are now attending Penn, Harvard, Yale, and Brown. Three of the four are attending their top choice college. Few of them are not at a top 20 school.

If it still works the same way it did before, WTP is already significantly subsidized. The tuition fee the year DD went was only about 35% of the cost of the program. The rest was covered by MIT and sponsors. If you have a waver for 1/2 of the tuition, then you are probably paying less than 20% of the cost of the program.

@tonystarkofwinterfell @lshaynal @Much2learn Thank you so much for the replies! I want to go into medicine with possibly a biomedical engineering major, so I’m not sure if WTP would be the best path for me. It’s such an amazing program, though, and it’d be an honor to attend, there’s just a barrier of affordability

@happyalldatime if it’s a financial barrier/you have special circumstances/you’re right at the cusp of receiving full aid, maybe you could talk to the WTP people about your financial aid award if you’re admitted?

Do you know if the income family income they ask for is the taxable income?
