WTP MIT

Hi all,

I’m a current junior hoping to apply to the WTP @ MIT this year, but I have taken an AP CompSci Class. If I apply only ME, will I be at an inherent disadvantage because of excess experience?

Hi! WTP-ME 2016 here. If you look at the program guidelines, it says that “Applicants who have too much CS experience for WTP-EECS should select “Only ME” (Mechanical Engineering) on the Curriculum Track Preference question of the WTP application.” If you have too much CS experience you’re not fit for the EECS track, but not at a disadvantage for ME (actually it’s expected that you only apply ME).

Our group varied from people who knew multiple languages to people who just started learning coding basics at WTP. ME is a lot more lenient in terms of CS knowledge, since coding isn’t the main focus of mechanical engineering (though it is an aspect, since we learned MATLAB and had coding lectures). Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions :slight_smile:

Thank you so much!

Hey!! I have a few questions about the WTP app, and I hope you won’t mind answering them. :slight_smile:

1.) For the second essay question, what exactly is it asking for? I feel like I’m over-analyzing the prompt, but I don’t want to answer the wrong question. :stuck_out_tongue:

2.) If I didn’t mention an activity I do in the “After School and Summer Activities” section but talked about it in my essays, is that okay? Or should I stick to talking about something I already mentioned? I’m just wondering because I have 6 activities that are important to me, but there is not enough room for all of them.

hey! i’m applying too for only ME because im in ap comsci. I read the thread for last year and a lot of the girls seem amazing (perfect score on act, 3205085 APs). I REALLY want to go to wtp because i have no engineering experience and i love math & science,but im also in 0 stem extra curriculars so idk??? but i’d love to be able to talk about everything here!

@fruitlover Hi! I’m assuming you were asking me (?) Sorry I didn’t see this earlier - I didn’t get a notification about it :\

  1. haha good question I remember being so confused by that prompt and emailing WTP, to which they answered with “This is an open-ended question and you should interpret it the way that makes the most sense to you. “The way you interact with the world” can include how your STEM interests (and I suppose skills) affect the way you view the rest of your life, including STEM and non-STEM areas. Do you find that you see things differently than some of your friends who are not as interested in STEM? As we say in the question, we do not want a list of technologies in general, we are more interested in you personally and what fascinates you and if your STEM interests spill over into other parts of your life.” and then I wrote an essay on the day of the deadline but I still don’t know tbh

But my essay was mainly about how all of the things I did were rooted in the analytical/STEM side of me – the choreography I made was calculated in its movement, my detail when drawing was similar to my detail when measuring wood, etc. This is a question open to interpretation and there’s definitely no “right” way to answer it. Just consider: how does STEM affect you and your thinking/attitude/view on life?

  1. Hmm I’d probably stick with the 5 you have. Are the activities you already listed the 5 most important activities (out of the 6) to you? If you were prompted to write about an activity important to you, it would be logical that the one you write about would one of the most, if not the most, important to you, to show where you deepest values lie. (Although this might be a question you’d want to ask WTP directly.)
