@evtexia I wrote about chemistry concepts and their applications to real life and how no one else relates to my thoughts. Just write about a STEM topic that really fascinates you and how you see a certain STEM subject in real life. That’s what the question is asking.
@jjoojjoo Hello! First of all, thank you for creating this discussion thread! And congratulations on being accepted to WTP and MIT I just had a quick question - I have never won national/state competitions (After School & Summer Activities section). Will that hurt my chances of being accepted?
@chocl8luver Hi and thanks! Me too, and it’s okay.
I think that they’re really looking for curiosity and a drive to learn, so it’s more about the essays than your accomplishments.
good luck to everyone !!
@evtexia what track did you apply for? good luck! :)>-
@chocl8luver i said no preference :-S bc im interested in both and tbh id be happy to get accepted at all so
ahhhh I just submitted my application too Good luck to everyone!
Just one question for any alums/knowledgeable people out there- my school has this whole process in order to get a transcript/report card, and I wasn’t able to get mine in time for the app (because of all the college stuff going on recently), so I submitted a note in place of my transcript, which I know it says you’re not supposed to do. Do you think they will let me email it to them along with my 11th grade grades? I still submitted my application anyways because it’s worth a shot, but does anyone know anything?
@eiude I think you are ok. Just email them the transcript when it’s ready and indicate your school’s issue. I think last year I had to email another version of my transcript because semester grades weren’t 100% complete at the deadline.
@jjoojjoo Thank you so much!!
@jjoojjoo what is the overall experience like at wtp? What was the everyday schedule? And what did you do on the weekends?
@aks1118
WTP was really the best experience ever! All the students were so passionate to learn, and all the staff were so willing to help. It was such a collaborative and supportive environment. Working with them was really motivating.
I was in EECS. During the weekdays (for 1st 3 weeks), we had EE, CS, and Discrete Math classes during the day (9AM -4PM) and office hours in the evening. Each class gives you homework. What’s amazing is that you get to collaborate with your WTP friends on homework! I slept around 11-12, which is not that bad considering that class starts at 9. During the weekends, we explored Boston/Cambridge, went on field trips (Revere Beach, Chinatown, Museum of Science, Museum of Fine Arts, and more!), and finished up homework. There are office hours on Sunday evenings. During the last week, we had a 1 day lecture about motors and then built a motor. There’s a motor contest in the end.
I wasn’t in ME, but their schedule was kind of similar to ours, except they learned different things. They took classes during the 1st 3 weeks and built a Rube Goldberg machine during the last week. They went on pretty much the same field trips as us, except they also went to a theme park in New Hampshire.
WTP was a bit more challenging than high school, but all the collaboration made it so much better! I became friends with girls all over the country. I learned how to be more independent. I found my future career.
^^i was in the ME track 2017 (and I’m also going to MIT next year) and our schedule was similar.
8:30ish - 4:30ish we had classes with a few breaks and lunch in between. during lunch we would often have talks from professors with the EECS (pronounced eeks, lol) girls which were REALLY COOL!!! like seriously awesome and totally memorable 9393939/10 recommend
our classes consisted of our instructors and tutors teaching us physics. we learned topics of mechanics, fluid dynamics, thermostuff, and some circuits and motors
we also had a bunch of cool field trips to places like Google Cambridge and other awesome engineering places
every week we had a project, pretty much. We got to work in teams to build things (i dont want to give it away but if youre curious you can pm me) and even do some of our own research projects.
everything is so cool!!!
The main thing that differs from the EECS experience is the ME only has 20 girls, so we all share a floor in the dorm. we became really close with each other and our tutors and would usually stay up until like 1-2 am just talking in the kitchen and eating brownies or cookies or whatever baked goods someone made. i’m still good friends with most of the girls (we have streaks on snapchat, i would call that being good friends) and our tutors and instructors were super cool i want to be their bffs
wtp is super cool and super fun and i wish everyone could experience it!!!
My daughter has applied for WTP this year - it sounds like a fantastic program. Good luck to everyone!! : )
There was a section on the application that asked if I knew any alumni of the program or of MIT. I put the one I knew down really well and who referred me to the program. Does anyone what WTP uses this information for? Do they contact that almuni?
I think they just want to know how well-known WTP is outside of the WTP/MIT alumnae realm. It doesn’t affect admissions. When I applied, I didn’t know anyone from WTP or MIT. For this year’s applicants, I believe a few girls I know put my name down; so far, I haven’t been contacted by WTP admissions.
I am a parent of a senior this year. My daughter attended the WTP program last year in ME and she had the best experience. So for any moms out there who might be a little hesitant about sending your daughter away for a month, I wanted to say that this program really was a wonderful experience for my daughter. It opened her eyes to possibilities she had really never thought of before. My husband and I are very grateful for what the program did for her.
Did anyone get any acceptances??
@charykit1 the notification day is April 27 this year… fingers crossed for all!
Do you happen to know what time the decisions come out on the 27th?
