Does it work? Does anyone know? I have had problems with a strict LAN and UPnP, so I'm guessing there will also be XboxLive problems.

Oh god I hope so. (Im applying and that would make me so happy). Also while on the subject of Xbox does anybody know if it’s abnormal to have one in a dorm room?

I do not go to Duke, so I don’t know; I would assume that it would after some effort if it does not work right away.

@MW - To me it is not “abnormal”, but iffy. It seems like time not spent studying should be spent connecting on campus. I suppose playing Xbox does count as connecting, though. Not to mention it is fun! Just controversial.

I probably wouldn’t play it all that much I just want to have it so I could if I wanted to. I mean we can’t socialize 24/7 right?

I have a friend who got his PS3 working online, but to do so, I believe he had to go on the web browser and register his machine (like you would do for a PC or iPod). Since the Xbox 360 doesn’t have a web browser (correct me if I’m wrong), I’d assume it would be harder to get working. I haven’t had experience with an Xbox myself though–if no students with 360s respond in here, you could probably just email OIT about it.

As for whether having an Xbox in your dorm room is unusual–not at all! However, you probably won’t end up playing it very much, just because there’s so much to do. I know a lot of people who have an Xbox in their dorm rooms, but very few who play regularly.

You will need the MAC address of the machine. Anything that uses Duke’s internet needs to be registered first with OIT. Usually this is done by redirecting your browser the first time you try to use the Duke network, but if you don’t have a browser, you can do it online with another computer instead. It’s a bit harder to do it manually since you need to know your MAC address and what part of the network you’re on.

The MAC address of any piece of hardware should be printed directly on the label affixed to the chassis on the outside. Just look for stuff like serial number, product number, MAC address. The process of registering a machine online is as simple as going to netreg.duke.edu, choosing the dorm/quad/campus that you live in, manually typing in the MAC address, and pressing submit.

Alternatively, you can bring a router (I know this is not encouraged since Duke has its own campus-wide wireless network), and either register its MAC address using the process above or clone the MAC address of a computer that’s already registered on the network onto the router (most router firmware allows this).

However, one thing to note is that I don’t know which ports the Xbox Online service uses and whether those ports are open on the Duke network. My experiences with this type of stuff (mainly setting up an ftp server in my room) is that the common ports are usually accessible, but I’m not positive about the Xbox specifically.

I play xbox live everyday here. you’re goooood

Yup it definitely works. I have mine set up with wifi. All you have to do is register your machine like you did with your laptop.

Thanks! Yeah, there’s not much time to play it, but I’m reserving it for those boring nights (If I stay over Fall Break, Thanksgiving) when there are no events.

Xbox live is awesomeness
