Yale 2014 Hopefuls

About $800 including SATs, ACTs [ACTs are so expensive!]…wow.

Oh my gosh you guys. Those fees are crazy. I actually have no idea how much I’ve spent, but I did go to England for an interview, which was insanely expensive.

Cambridge?? King’s College? UCL?

Cambridge. It was pretty much the best weekend ever.

Waiitt you flew to England for an interview?? That’s awesome! :P

Omg, what was Cambridge like? Dish, dish! I want to study abroad there if I ever in my wildest dreams could! :)

@ Handala: I filled out the UCAS and the Cambridge Overseas application and the SAQ, UCAS is sort of like the common app, all online. Cambridge Overseas is paper, an I mailed it in with my official transcript. The SAQ is for each college and online.

@ Eiffel: Then you should have applied! It’s cheaper than Yale without FA. But it was really awesome. I just know about Christ’s College, but it’s right in the city center. And Cambridge is such a nice city, with great shopping. All the other applicants were really nice, if a bit nervous. I don’t know if any of you guys have ever watched the HBO series Rome, but I’m like 90% sure I walked past one of the stars while I was there. The colleges all have porters, who help you out with stuff, like providing safety pins when my pants were too long and who are the loveliest people ever. The subject interview was one of the most intellectually stimulating half-hours of my life.

I didn’t even consider applying to a non-American school until the Cambridge deadline passed! :frowning: So now I hope to study abroad either there, Oxford, King’s College, or UCL. What made the interview so stimulating to you, by the way?

I guess it might be the personal nature of interviews. I had two interviewers, though one sort of dominated. They’re asking questions about which I’ve never thought, like describing moods of the English language in my own words, and challenging my answers, though not in a combative way. To some extent, it was the fact that I was interviewing for a subject which I’ve never really had the chance to talk about in any academic way, a subject which isn’t really taught in high schools. American interviews are so… touchy-feely in comparison. I like them, of course, but after I got home, I suddenly felt like a Cambridge interview was an experience everyone should have.

That sounds really interesting! So, you were interviewing for some branch of English or linguistics, I take it?

Oh that’s really cool! Seeing as I have family in England, my mom encouraged me to apply to Cambridge. But I don’t even know how it is there.

I think my cousin went to King’s College, as did my grandfather. Yay England >.<

Wow, that interview sounds like fun. Some of my friends are applying overseas, but there was a kid from my school last year who was accepted into HYP but rejected from Oxford.
The UCAS application is much like the Canadian one, I heard. Do they focus more on grades, then, because the Canadian application lacks required essays and teacher recommendations?

AW LUCKY! I was going to apply to oxford, but I read their app requirements and there was a bunch of weird testing so I decided against it :(

I filled out the CSS once, sent it to yale (cost like 50 bucks ugh) then my parents decided the fee wasn’t worth it, since we’re not getting any finaid anyway.

@darkblademaster: Most schools in the UK focus a lot on grades, even though there is also a teacher rec and a required essay (both of which are about 95% on academics) but I always hear that for Oxbridge, the interview is really important too. So it’s less subjective than American universities, but more so than a lot of other UK universities.

@Eiffel: I’m applying for linguistics.

@drpvv: King’s is so gorgeous! I walked past it and was like, “Woah, why didn’t I apply there‽”

To make up for not applying to a British school I think I’m going for a semester abroad in college. That would be so much fun. :)

^I really want to too! Everytime I go on some college tour, I always ask about their study abroad options. It would be nice to go somewhere entirely obscure; get a whole new look on life.

Some of my friends went abroad this year, actually, for school year abroad. I might have considered it too except that it coincided with the college application process.

The college application process limits you! I’m sure I could have started earlier, but I didn’t, and I had to forgo a trip to London to finish them. Still mad about it. Who knows the next time I’ll get a chance to go!

Hello, I’m from NJ and hope to study molecular biology. Also, if admitted, I’d love to sing acapella!

I listed my major as Cognitive Science. Anyone else? :)
