@makemesmart I also wanted to clarify that I did not apply to all of the Ivys in order to say that I got into all of those schools; in fact, I only applied to 3 Ivys (HYP). I was just using the example of someone applying to all Ivys to make clear that some random adult online ought not to dictate how and why someone should apply to any number of universities. It’s important for people to understand that people apply to many schools for many reasons-- to have a number of choices, to get the best deal, some people don’t know where to go, to have a mix of not only safeties but financial safeties, or to get into at least one school.
For discussion purposes, remember that admissions is something (very close) to a zero sum game. If a person like @MaybeHarvard2022 is accepted to Yale then, almost by definition given the finite number of admissions letters that will be sent, there was a bubble kid who was rejected. Based on how the Ivy League schools administer admissions, i.e. “holistically”, the bubble kid that would have gotten into Yale had @MaybeHarvard2022 withdrawn his application after gaining admission to Harvard was likely a URM/Questbridge type applicant, just like @MaybeHarvard2022. That is precisely the sort of person who would benefit most from an Ivy diploma and, yet, within this hypothetical, such kid may now not be admitted to any Ivy at all.
People have the right to do all sorts of things in life that might be slightly positive for the person, e.g. earning cool bragging rights, but will have highly negative results for someone else, i.e. the person who was rejected from Yale to make room for a kid who has no intention of attending. I don’t know if this one of those situations, just a little food for thought, I hope.
Does Yale superscore?
@ReappeaR SAT yes, ACT no.
@MaybeHarvard2022 Why don’t they superscore the ACT?
@ReappeaR they just don’t. Not sure why tho. Only a few top schools superscore ACT.
Sigh, it’s annoying how most top schools superscore the SAT and not ACT…
@dochouse People have their reasons for doing reasons for doing what @MaybeHarvard2022 did and in all honesty, it’s seems perfectly fine and pretty smart to me. You have the ability to compare financial aid packages. And even if it was for bragging rights, so what? If he gets in, he’ll have another option. If he doesn’t, then he doesn’t. Simple as that. If this is about the fact that he’ll be “taking spots” from other qualified students, so be it. Not everyone’s going to get into their desired colleges and dreams will be crushed no matter where or not he applies to these schools. That’s just life! That’s why schools have wait lists.
I just got a personalized letter in the mail from the admissions officer who advocated on my behalf–Yale truly is a special place! Best of luck to all.
Wow nice!! Where r u from? @Benji3025
@yayaylearner Pennsylvania! Still waiting on the awesome Yale t-shirt, though.
super happy for u! Getting a personalized letter sounds so awesome~ Hope u get ur shirt soon! @Benji3025
@dochouse Honestly, why does that even concern you? It gives into the mentality that ‘he’s taking spots from people’ Nooooo, he is not. Some of us really need to do this to compare financial aid packages. Some of us do this so we can empower the other students at our high schools. Whatever his reason, you really aren’t in the position to criticize him, he’s a random teen on the internet, you’re not his parent. Stop trying to monitor him and keep your opinions to yourself.
I went through your profile, and saw that you called someone an a**-hole, so I’m sure that this isn’t a surprise.
@dochouse his choices are up to him, how dare you criticize his college application decisions. you are a grown adult and still have the time and the audacity to harass ambitious students on the internet.
@dochouse You’ve somehow singlehandedly made this thread really petty… great job
@ everyone,
In my opinion, you all honestly should have just ignored him/her or let it go once @MaybeHarvard2022 had responded. The original post was beyond dumb, but honestly I think this is being blown a bit out of proportion – let alone distracting from the actual purpose of the thread. Although I understand the irony in posting about how we should stop posting about an issue, let me just end by urging that we drop the subject.
@18YearsASlav Lol what did you do to get into CC jail? Thank you for the concern. However, the OP was rude to me so in the moment I decided to be rude back. Wasn’t the best response but it is what it is.
Was avoiding posting in this thread for a really long time because i felt like it’ll feed into my disillusionment. But here i am. So hi there, applicants far more qualified than I.
MODERATOR’S NOTE:
I agree.
As an FYI, being rude back also violates Terms of Service. Several posts edited/deleted. Move on from questioning others’ motivations, please.
