Yale 2023 Applicants Discussion

.

had an interview, was accepted.

Hey can I still apply and add to commonapp because I read somewhere deadline was extended till tommorrow

I donā€™t think so. Itā€™s a set date. Jan 2. Itā€™s on their website. If you remember where you read that, please do post for us to see.

I hope you go!

@anonymous522083
I think you were looking at Yale SOMā€™s deadline, which is January 7th. Or you were looking at Yaleā€™s EA extension because of the hurricane, but that was in November. So I donā€™t think the deadline was extended. But if you havenā€™t submitted your application, there were instances where the Common App remains open for a couple more days for the people who already have Yale on their CA list.: read this thread.

Good luck.

Hi! Iā€™ve been lurking on CC for years and this is my first post. @gibby and @skieurope, Iā€™m looking for your thoughts.

DS applied SCEA to Yale for 2023, we live in a smaller city and he did not get contacted for an interview, although he knows kids who did get an interview but got rejected SCEA. He was deferred and we are wondering if that means he may have an opportunity to interview now. Website does not address this situation, other than pretty clearly saying donā€™t call about interviews. He did contact his regional admissions counselor via email who has not responded. We know that the inteview will not be a make or break, but he would like to opportunity to talk to an alum about their experiences - during time at school and post grad. Thoughts? TIA!!

@collegemarathon: Sorry about the deferral. As the RD round has about 6X as many applicants as the SCEA round, alumni volunteers are just overwhelmed during the months of January, February and March. So, if your son did not get interviewed in the SCEA round, I would not expect him to be interviewed in the RD round. Your son (and you) should take heart knowing that students who were interviewed were rejected ā€“ and your son was not. So, heā€™s still in the running with or without an interview. Best of luck to you and your son!

Thanks, @gibby! I appreciate your wise counsel, as always. And, on behalf of the community, may I be so bold as to offer gratitude for all you do on this forum - and the others you respond to as well. You are a source of great inspiration, hope, grace and reason for all parents and students who frequent these pages. You and @skieurope have been of great assistance to our family for the past 5 years - and we have three more kiddos to go, so please keep at it!

^^ My son has his Yale alumni interview tomorrow. @gibby, @BKSquared, and @skieurope have all provided great advice that has been really useful to him. Thank you for all that you do for the community!

Thank you @collegemarathon and @mjrube94 and best of luck to all.

I would bet dollars to donuts that many applicants got in with that score SCEA, but most likely were recruited athletes or otherwise had strong hooks. I donā€™t doubt there are a number who get in each year in that score range (SCEA and RD) who had a compelling application without hooks. At the same time, there are many candidates who are rejected with 36/1600ā€™s. You can go to Yaleā€™s common data set and see the data for yourself. https://oir.yale.edu/sites/default/files/cds_2017-2018.pdf

My son applied RD (very late) and we were pretty shocked to see he was asked to interview this weekend. I guess I havenā€™t paid enough attention. Is this normal? No other school has asked to interview him and he did not request an interview. What does it mean that they want to speak to him? Iā€™m trying to not read much into it.

Yale tries to interview all applicants as long as there are enough alumni interviewers in the area where the applicant lives. Donā€™t read too much into this. There are a bunch of posts with opinions on the importance (or lack thereof) of interviews and what to expect/how to prepare for them.

@TytoAlba my son applied on Oct. 30 for SCEA and he was contacted the following week for an interview. He had a great one, lasting almost two hours! But he was deferred nonetheless 8-| The interview is a wonderful opportunity for the candidate but very few turn into offers of admission.

OK thanks for the info. Just reached out to a cousin who is a Yale alumna and found out she actually does interviews for them. She said itā€™s just a good opportunity to engage the alumni and to just have a nice time at Starbucks basically.

What was your ED rejection?

IMO, alumni interviews at any college serve two purposes. One, and probably the most important, is to keep alumni engaged with the college. Two, is to eyeball the candidates and suss out any potential outliers on either end ā€“ the ones who are completely inappropriate (e.g., use profanity, show up late, insult the interviewer, hit on the interviewer, blurt out that they really donā€™t want to go to Yale) or the rare one that is so off-the-charts outstanding in person in a way that does not fully show in the application.

I know that Iā€™m late to the party but if you liked Gossip Girl you HAVE to watch Gilmore Girls

My daughter got in SCEA and never had an interview. We lived in an area where there are many alumni interviewers. Matter of fact, the other kids at my daughterā€™s school were all interviewed except her. At the time, it really stressed us out thinking we were ā€œscreened out.ā€ I even posted here asking for thoughts. Just want to share this so those who donā€™t get interviews will not loose sleep
