Yale 2024 Applicants Discussion

@Lunarlitgend My school isn’t really competitive overall, but the top 10 is insanely competitive: all they do is learn. Some of them take university-level maths and physics courses at our university …
If I’d tell anyone at my school that I’ll apply to Yale, they probably laugh at me or judge me for it, so I just say nothing about it.

Wow, already done with the common app and yale essay? That’s really nice! You don’t have to worry too much about essays anymore (except for the other supplements) :).
Are you going to apply to UPenn huntsman? I read about it and it’s a fantastic
program imo, I would definitely apply if language SATs were available here.

I ordered the SAT 1 book from collegeboard and am receiving it today
What is your career goal?

@Naxiss Dang you too. :frowning: I’m sorry to hear that. I honestly hate it when people mock others for their dreams and aspiration when they have no idea what they’re capable of. It’s frustrating really and reflects more about them than the person they’re actually judging.

Thank you

I’ve heard about the Hunstman program and yeah it’s really good! But I won’t be applying to that school. I toured UPenn with my family during spring break and when I toured Wharton the environment just didn’t click with me at all. I wasn’t a big fan of the vibe either. I mean I really liked UPenn overall but Wharton specifically just wasn’t it for me. So if I do plan on pursuing my MBA or higher for graduate school I wouldn’t apply to Wharton, despite it being the best business school in the country.
For undergrad, I’m applying to the college of arts and sciences as a double major of PPE (politics, philosophy, and economics) and an English major. I could even learn some business skills at Wharton if I wanted to but it’s not a school I’d like to be stuck in overall. It’s just my preference and fit so don’t let it affect you or your opinions because Wharton/Hunstman could be a great fit for you

I honestly have no idea what I want to be in terms of a career. I’m pretty undecided right now, at least in terms of a profession. But I know for a fact that I want to be an Author and an Entrprenuer (on the side). The fact that I’m undecided really frustrates my parents (they’re African immigrants :joy:) especially since they’re forcing me to go into engineering, medical, or law (law as in lawyer not the major itself) which is really frustrating because I’m not interested in any one of those. I’m absolutely considering the law major but I know that I can’t see myself being a lawyer. For engineering I don’t only not like science but I suck at it. Like physics especially is my worst subject and I’m terrible with machines nor am I a big fan of working with them (not to generalize). As for medical, same thing with science plus I get really Squeamish and stuff. If not personal preference, I’ve done the in-depth research on the fields as well. When I’m honest with them about it I sound closeminded to them but in my opinion that’s just me knowing what I want. :yum:

How about you?

@Lunarlitgend I wish I could apply to Huntsman, but we don’t have language tests in this time of the year and I can only apply to five schools (money money money). I didn’t know about double majoring at Yale, will look into that  I’d love a political science/history double major.

I want to be the minister of education in my country. Ah, that sucks that your parents want you to go into those fields. My parents aren’t like that, but my grandma wants me to go into law or medical (my grandmother from my father’s side and my mother are immigrants from Suriname, a country in South-America) and she doesn’t like the fact that I want to go into politics :(. `And my counselor, a maths teacher, really wants me to study maths, so I don’t know what he’s going to write in his rec when I’m going to say that I want to study political science…

Do you already have your letters of recommendations?

@Naxiss Oh I’m sorry to hear that :frowning:
Yeah! Yale lets you double major! But they don’t offer minors unfortunately
I talked to a student who recently graduated from Yale and she said that she’d majored in English but took a lot of Art History classes to a point where she could’ve gotten a minor for it but since Yale doesn’t let you minor it didn’t really count as one.

Dude THAT’S SO COOL! YOU WANT TO BE THE MINISTER OF EDUCATION! DAMN! Those are some big dreams right there!!!
I’m glad your parents are more chill about your goals but I’m sorry your grandmother isn’t. I’m shocked, though, that she doesn’t support you going into something so huge and impactful. Maybe she’ll understand one day
As for your math teacher I’m sure he won’t mind. It’s your life after all and if he’s mad over the fact that you didn’t choose to become what he wanted you to become then it’s best you find another teacher to ask for a recommendation.

Yeah! Recommendations was actually the first thing this group chatted about. I don’t mind recapping though. I asked my teachers on the last week of school for recommendations. I gave them my resume and brag sheet and everything so then they have the whole summer to work on it. I felt like it was better that way especially since I asked pretty popular teachers and I knew they would’ve been swarmed the first few weeks of school. I’m so close with them I couldn’t really see anyone else writing them for me.

How about you?

Yale’s application is now open on the Common App! Good luck everyone!

hi friends! there’s going to be a Yale science and engineering forum near me… has anyone been to one before? if so, how was it?

Hi everyone! I’ll be applying SCEA to Yale in a couple months. If anyone is familiar with Yale Young Global Scholars (YYGS), I participated in that one summer and was just curious as to whether or not this will help my chances at Yale. I also had an on-campus interview while there.

@musicallover2040
Hi! Yeah I’m familiar with YYGS. I was actually blessed enough to be accepted to the 2019 LPC program and attended.

Honestly, I think that YYGS does have some impact on acceptance. On quora there’s a few response to this exact same question. So if you’re interested look into it. Some said that 40% of the students who attended YYGS got into Yale. Apparently with a 6% acceptance rate that does make a difference. But as you can see it’s definitely not a drastic one.

Overall, YYGS can help but only slightly. When you think about many of the students applying to Yale or schools like Yale attend prestigious programs like YYGS so it’s not going to do much of making you stand out other than the fact that it shows that you were competitive since YYGS is a selective program.

As for that interview it’s pretty much weighed just like any other interview whether or not you took it on campus or with an alumni.

Hopefully that helps

I also wanna apply for SCEA. CAN SOMEONE RATE MY CHANCES FOR YALE even if they are like 1-2 % I will apply.

Hi, if you possibly could give me your opinions… My son will be applying to Yale EA this fall. He is not sure if he should submit his subject test scores or just submit one, since they are not required (although recommended) and he doesn’t think they are high enough… He got 780 on Math and 690 on Liturature.

Info about my son, if helpful: His Sat score is 1520 (800M & 720 R&W) 1 sitting. He plans to take SAT again in early October. All 5’s on the 5 AP’s he has taken.
Attends a rigorous high school: 4.76 weighted GPA

He wants to major in Film and Media studies.

Any adivce would be appreciated. Thanks.

@BKSquared… hi I meant to reach out to you for my above post regarding my son’s subject tests. Thanks.

I think he will be at a disadvantage if he does not submit any SAT2’s based on where he is going to school and the fact he has taken on done well on 5 AP’s. The 690 on Lit won’t be an auto disqualifier, especially since his other scores (SAT and APs) are strong. Does he have the time to take 1 more SAT2, maybe in a subject where he is pretty comfortable? Looks like he can still make the Oct 5 testing date which is within the AO’s suggested deadline dates.

@BKSquared, thanks so much for the response.
Unfortunately he doesn’t feel there is another Subject test he feels comfortable taking.
He could try and take the Lit one again to see if he gets a higher score. Even though he scored well with a 1520 on the SAT, he was planning on doing the SAT again on October 5th since he only took it once.
In your opinion do you think this isn’t necessary and maybe it’s better to try and get a better score on the Lit subject test?

Also, could it be frowned upon just to send the 780 Math2 subject test since Yale didn’t post an amount of subject tests to take?

Thank you again for your knowledge and advice. We really appreciate it.

@SLF1836 What were the AP’s he got 5’s on? Is he applying to other schools that recommend 2 SAT2’s? You can PM me if you have enough posts and want to take this conversation off the main thread.

@BKSquared, I don’t have enough posts to PM (although at the rate I’m asking you questions, I may get there ?). He isn’t applying to any other schools that recommend 2 SAT2’s.
The 5 APs’ he got 5’s on:
Government
Psychology
English Language
Physics C Mechanics
Calculus AB

And again he will be applying as a Film and Media studies major-- if that takes things into consideration. Thank you.

@SLF1836 I’d probably not report the 690 and report the Math2 because Yale no longer recommends 2 tests. Definitely self report the AP’s. I wouldn’t stress too much about whether or not to report 1, 2 or no SAT2’s. At this point, the admissions decision is going to hinge on factors other than test scores.

Good luck.

@BKSquared, thank you.

Would submitting both Biology subject tests (E and M) be considered redundant, even if I did well on both of them? I got an 800 on Bio-E and 780 on Bio-M. I also took Math 2 and got a 750.

Yes, they would be duplicative. You can still send, but the 800 would likely be the only one considered.

@skieurope Should I still submit my Math 2 score even though it’s not that great? I’m planning on majoring in Biochemistry so I don’t think math is as important for me. What are your thoughts?
