Yale 2024 Applicants Discussion

Unless you have a 4th test that you did not mention that’s higher than 750, you should submit the M2 test and the higher of your bio tests to give the 2 that Yale requests. It’s a bit disingenuous to call a 750 “not that great.” Perhaps not ideal for MIT or Caltech, but it’s more than fine for Yale.

I’m applying to Yale RD if I don’t get into my SCEA, Princeton (no point applying anywhere else in that case because I would choose Pton over everything else). I will c and p my stats from a different thread onto here:
Stats:
Race: Asian
Gender: Male
SAT: 1590
SAT II: Math 2 800, Physics 800, Biology 800
AP: Computer Science A, World History, Calculus BC, Physics I, Physics 2, Physics C Mechanics, Physics C Electricity and Magnetism (self studied for those two), English Lang/Comp, US History, Biology. Taking Chemistry, English Lit and Comp, Macro econ and Government this year.
Rank: Top 7.5% at very competitive high school.
GPA: 3.87 UW/4.45 W
EC:
Math:

  • USAMO Qualifier 2019
  • Got a 13 on AIME 2019
  • Top 20 at PUMaC (Princeton University Math Competition) 2017 and HMMT (Harvard-MIT Math Tournament) 2019.
  • Three-time AIME qualifier
  • Co-founded a successful nonprofit organization dedicated to furthering math education in Houston/the country. Used this to hold book drives and fundraisers for the nearby school district (because they sadly don’t have money to pay for any textbooks). Have expanded this to meet the needs of people all across the country and currently have hundreds of students ( each of whom I individually help with class work/homework).
  • Have played badminton and ultimate frisbee for the past four-five years, won some minor awards in both
  • Magic: My second passion. Performed at several events (from professional ones, to ones in retirement homes, to just performing at cafes for people who wanted to see).
  • Play the violin
  • Officer of four clubs at my school this year: MNHS and Badminton club. Founder/President of Ultimate Frisbee and Card Magic club. Used to be an officer for another club but the sponsor left and no one else was willing to sponsor it.
  • Worked/researched myelomic cancer (myeloma) at a local (very famous) hospital.
  • did a bioinformatics project last year with a mentor at another local hospital(again a very prestigious one)
  • About 100 hours of volunteering?
  • AP Scholar honorary thingy (forgot what it’s called- the one where u have like 8 4s/5s or something)

Hey quick q. How often does Yale send likely letters if they do? I read online that they do often send them but I just wanted to get more information.

Yes they do. But if you’re not a recruited athlete, they only send them out RD. Be advised that the vast majority of accepted students will not receive a Likely Letter.

Hey guys,
I am thinking of applying to Yale Restrictive Early Action this year and I would like to know my chances of getting in since my stats aren’t the most outstanding. I’m really interested in the intersection between law and tech (tech law) since technology has such a huge impact on our society. I’m thinking of applying as an economics and mathematics major or a ethics, politics, and economics major.

Hi,
I’m an international student (I’m from India) looking to apply to Yale this year. What do you think my chances are with the following stats?

SAT: 1550 (800 EBRW, 750 Math)
SAT Subject Tests: Yet to take the test
School Courseload: English, Physics, Chem, Math, Bio
(I do the ISC board, which is an Indian curriculum)

Converted GPA (weighted): 4.0 on a 4.2 scale
Current average in school: 85% (this is the bit that worries me)

Topped my school in the grade 10 ICSE Board Exams and won several merit awards for my academic performance.

Have consistently won the annual General Proficiency awards in my old school for academic achievement from 2014-2018

Extracurricular Activities:

  • National level debater
  • Won speaker awards and team awards in numerous local debating tournaments
  • Several awards in Model United Nations, including winning Best Delegate two years in a row at Harvard MUN India
  • Member of the Organizing Committee and Executive Board for several school Model UN conferences
  • Learnt music for 8 years, passed several music exams (Grade 6 Musical Theatre, Grade 4 Classical Singing, Grade 3 Music Theory, Grade 3 Piano)
  • Participated and won awards in several local and national level quiz competitions
  • Participated in several national and global science fairs. Was one team out of 10 teams selected across India to be a part of the Intel Girls in Technology Showcase 2017

Please be brutally honest - do I have any chance of getting accepted?

I am an international student who got into Yale and Harvard last year (I chose Yale), if anyone has any questions here or wants to pm me.

@blrcollegekid24 I’d say you are competitive based on the information you gave. I myself was heavily involved in MUN and it’s a great EC to have. Your SAT score is also fantastic. However, there are many more factors that play into an admission decision at these schools. Plenty of international students have excellent SAT scores and super impressive extracurriculars. Your letters of recommendation need to be great, for one thing. When I got my teachers to write LORs, I tried to be as involved in that process as possible, explaining what American colleges expect and so on. Your essays, and this is especially important for internationals I think, also have to be extremely good. Pick a topic that humanizes you, show how you think, be extremely real, show - don’t tell. If you nail these, I think you have a real shot.

That said, I don’t know the Indian school system so have no way to comment on the 85%. If it is a 4.0 out of 4.2, that doesn’t sound like a huge problem. If it isn’t too good in your context, try to get your LORs to emphasize your academic abilities and maturity in thinking.

These are just one person’s thoughts and in no way definitive. Someone might totally disagree.

Okay, you guys’ test scores and involvement are just amazing. I’m applying to Yale and I’m honestly terrified because My school nor community does not offer as many programs and opportunities for research, service projects, or really anything, so I just take advantage of the limited resources I have in my school and it kind of scares me because I feel like my environment and its limitations will cause me to not “stack up” to other brilliant applicants (like the ones in this chat). For the resources I have in my area, my resume and grades and course rigor are the best that they could possibly be, but I feel like I won’t compare to others. Is this fear pointless or something that should be setting off red flags for me?

@GSM158320 Don’t be intimidated by the test scores and extracurricular activities of the other applicants here on this thread or anywhere else. If you had limited opportunities to participate in various extracurricular activities, explain that in your application. You can use the section in the Common App that gives you room to elaborate on circumstances not reflected in your application. It’s not about what you have done in high school necessarily, but more so what you have done in high school given your resources and opportunities. If you can explain this in your application, the Admissions Office will not penalize you for having fewer ECs. Best of Luck!

@GSM158320 It doesn’t matter as much, from what I’ve read (i.e. LOADS of admissions blogs) - as long ass you make sure to explain what your circumstances are, the admissions officers will understand. I think they do try to consider each applicant within the context they come from, so having limited access shouldn’t be an issue (I hope). At least, that is what I tell myself because I know people who’ve done so many ECs and attended summer school abroad to boost their resume (something my circumstances would not allow) so I’m keeping my fingers crossed and hoping tat won’t count against me!

@popcorn454 - Thank you so much, that’s reassuring for sure. I don’t think LORs are a problem because my school sends lots of kids to top unis abroad, and they have loads of experience writing LORs. The essay is where I’m very worried though. I started the entire app process veryyy late and I have absolutely no clue how to start writing my essay - any tips?

Hey Everybody!

I am an international student looking forward to apply in Yale in REA. I have written great essays and probably my teachers would write great letters of recommendation for me. I will be taking my subject test on nov 2. I am hoping to get 800 on Maths level 1 and 750 in US history. I have 105 in Toefl. I have 1340 in SAT. That’s a setback. I have always been in top 1 pecent in my class with 95 percent in senior year.
I did an exchange program in USA for a year on U. Department of State Schoalrship. I have represented my country in many International confrences BUBW, GYLC and many more. Apart from them I do have other more wonderful extracurriculars of national and international levels. I have held several leadership positions in my school .

Overall, I am strong on extracurricular part. What are my chances at Yale? Do I have a shot ?

Please share your suggestions. Please be blunt in sharing your views.

A well-qualified international applicant has about a 3% chance at best. The odds with a 1340 would be much lower.

Okay that makes me feel a little more reassured about myself. I’m also trying to see if I can order additional AP exams and do some independent study for them. Also, I’m trying to conduct a research study that pertains to my major (Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies) to sort of show colleges how important these studies and trying to make a positive change.

Not even trying to sound like something I think the colleges want, because this is really me lol

Can someone give me the info about the clubs that Yale has or where can I find them?

@rmaxbulldog123 https://studentorgs.yalecollege.yale.edu/directory
there are also a number of secret societies located at yale if thats your thing

@maxbulldog123 Look on the Yale website. They have a list of plenty of different clubs and student associated groups on there

i’ve applied restrictive early action already! does anyone here know about how the interviews work. I know they prioritize REA applicants but i don’t know whether or not they directly contact you. any help?

@lamdanu OMG CONGRATULATIONS! THAT’S ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! YOU SHOULD FEEL SO PROUD! I SERIOUSLY HOPE FOR THE BEST FOR YOU!

I don’t know much about the interview but I do know that they should be contacting you soon now that you’ve submitted. The interviews I know are usually alumni interviews meaning that your interviewer will be from around your area. The interviews are mostly very casual. In short they’re just a conversation where your interviewer is trying to get to know more about you as a person and you’re trying to get to know more about your interviewer as well as the school. Every interviewer is different. Sometimes they’re in your field of study sometimes they’re the complete opposite of your field of study. Some interviewers come in and let the conversation take its course or others come in with a set list of questions. Sometimes they’re younger/recent graduates and sometimes they’re older. It really depends but in the end the best advice I can give you is to just be yourself.

Review interview questions and practice them out loud but don’t practice them so much that you sound robotic. Maybe jot down notes on what you want your main points and values to be when speaking to your interviewer but don’t write out the answers because again it’ll lead to memorization and sounding robotic. Also, look up some about your interests! If you’re interested in politics look up what’s going on with the government right now or if you’re interested in STEM, look up whats going on in the business world. Make sure you have something that YOU’RE GENUINELY INTERSTED IN/PASSIONATE ABOUT to talk about! Bring a resume or even a writing/art portfolio if you’re thinking of minoring/majoring in them or if it’s simply something that you’rwpassionate and you want something to show for it.
Always, ALWAYS come with around two to three questions to ask your interviwer whether it’d be about the school or about them. The answers should be genuine and specific and not something you can easily find on the website.

Dress business casual. Don’t wear something too fancy or something too flashy. They want to remember YOU, NOT your outfit!

Overall. Be prepared, come with questions, bring a resume (portfolio if it applies to you), and most importantly be yourself.

Hopefully that helps!
