Yale 2024 Applicants Discussion

Thanks all for your advice. I still applied SCEA in Yale. Yale is one of few Ivies which says that academic track record is more important than SAT score and a moderate SAT score can be compensated by strong academic record. I have been a Topper of my school in IB in Mumbai, got predicted of 43/45. Have done Cancer research for 6 months in my Junior year under an Oncologist and submitted entire project as STEM supplement, did community activity for Cancer awareness for below poverty line senior citizens in Mumbai, School Amansador of the year , glowing LORs I guess as assured by my teachers, put 4 months in Essays, English is not spoken at home belong to a middle class family in Mumbai. I have given my best shot. Let’s see my luck and destiny. Anyone else here applied for SCEA ? Thanks

@popcorn454

Hey everyone! CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL THE PEOPLE WHO SUBMITTED! I’M SO PROUD OF Y’ALL AND I just want to wish you all THE BEST OF LUCK! :slight_smile:

Also to everyone who’s posting their stats and asking us to chance them, I’m going to be honest I get it. I’ve done a chance me before and looking back now I sort of wish I hadn’t. The reason I did it was due to insecurity, not that I’m saying that’s why everyone on here is also doing it. But I’m just going to say that it’s fine to continue doing chance me’s. Freedom of speech.

But I’m also gonna say that you all have great stats and activities and awards and so on but we’re not admissions officers. Sure we can give you feedback on what you can do to strengthen your application like test scores and grades. But other than that, especially to people who are already strong in pretty much every area of the application, we really can’t tell you whether or not you’re gonna get in. People on here can say you’ll get in. Some people can say you won’t but our opinions, in the end, mean nothing. There have been plenty of people who’ve either gotten in despite the negative feedback and people who haven’t despite the positive feedback.

Again, we’re not admissions officers. All we do is provide validation not read the future. Even if your application is strong we can’t make a fair conclusion because there are thousands of other applicants that you’re going to be compared to that we haven’t seen to make that fair conclusion. The only way you’ll actually know is on decisions day. We don’t actually know what goes down in that office. We don’t know what Yale is thinking or what they’re looking for for the 2024 class. You can definitely have a fair shot at acceptance but despite your perfect stats and Extracurriculars you could also be rejected. Good job to everyone who’s applied but I think it’s better to not think about your chances and focus on continuing your passion, staying focused in school and what not, because the chance me’s are just going to make you more nervous and anxious and you can’t change what you can’t control.

YALL I JUST GOT AN EMAIL FROM MY ALUMNI INTERVIEWER SDKFJLSDKHFLKJSD

@lamdanu Ooh congrats!!!

I’m not a SCEA applicant but to all of you who are, good luck! I hope you all receive some great news in mid-December!

Have a nice day.

I haven’t gotten an email from an alumni interviewer yet, and I live in a mid-size city but without too many applicants (I assume). Should I be worried? I know Yale says it doesn’t disadvantage people without an interview, but I feel like I can really shine through one (I’m very much an extrovert). Thanks :smile:

^It’s also a function of the number of interviewers in your city/region and how timely the regional director is in assigning interviews and the interviewer contacting applicants. All we have is your email, so for applicants, make sure you check your email and look in your spam folder in case an email ended up there.

Thanks @BKSquared ! I didn’t see anything in my email since when I submitted my application, so I guess I’ll just wait and keep checking my email. Is there a date that would pretty much be the latest I could expect an alumni interview notification?

^ the deadline for turning in reports is Dec 1.

BKSquared, you wrote in the 2023 thread that you were a Yale alumni interviewer. You had such excellent advice. My child received an interview request, does that mean that she probably won’t be admitted to Yale? (Based on your experience)

^Getting an interview request is definitely not a negative. I do think it represents an opportunity to put a face/personality to the app. To the extent that our interviews are evaluative, the AO is looking for us to provide qualitative notes on characteristics such as curiosity, ability to express complex thoughts, thoughtfulness and depth of analysis, energy, focus. A good way to sum it up, would we enjoy engaging with this person intellectually and socially as a classmate, whether in a classroom setting or in the dining halls?

I think a strong interview report will help at the margins. I do think though that a negative or even lukewarm report may hurt unless the rest of the app is spectacular. In an exercise where you are trying to weed down 36,000 to 2,200, people tend to look for reasons to say “no” vs “yes”, especially among roughly comparable candidates.

Best of luck to your daughter. She should have try to have fun with the interview. For most of us who do this year after year, we generally want to support our interviewees.

Quick question @BKSquared, do regular decision applicants also get interviews?

^Yes. We start doing those after RD applications get turned in.

Okay, thank you!
