Yale 2024 Applicants Discussion

Some kids from my school were contacted in January for Yale interviews. I was not. However, I was contacted for an interview last Friday and when scheduling a time with my interviewer, he said that Yale wanted the report by March 14th. Could this mean anything about my application? Am I on the fence? Or did he just forget to contact me in Jan?

Could be either case, but I would approach it as if the interview were meaningful and see what happens on Ivy day. Good luck!

I think my interviewer forgot??? I originally thought it was going to be in-person, but then she had to reschedule and told me she would call on the rescheduled day. But she never did??? Idk what to do???

The fact she had to change to a phone interview meant that something came up for her on the scheduled date. Didn’t she have to drive several hours for the in person interview? If she doesn’t reach out to you today, I’d send her a “nice” email to the effect that you had looked forward to your call [yesterday] but that you understand that she probably had a hectic day. Is there a time to reschedule?

Is there still time? Would there be a point?

Can’t hurt.

@ski_racer Don’t feel alone. After a week of ignored emails and phone calls, S finally spoke with his interviewer yesterday, and the interview was set up for this afternoon. S called after school to confirm. No response. He drove 30 minutes and arrived early. Interview time came. No interviewer…45 minutes later, still a no show. Drove 30 minutes back home. Phone went to voicemail each time he tried to call, and he never received a call back. 2.5 hours wasted.

@planner03, that is really unacceptable behavior for an interviewer. After decisions are released, please call the admissions office. Interviewers are supposed to be ambassadors of Yale. This interviewer has failed miserably. I am sorry that this happened to your son. If it is any consolation, the interview was not going to make or break the decision on your son.

@BKSquared I guess we have to give the benefit of the doubt that there was (and continues to be, since still no call) , a dire emergency. It was really disappointing though because his Yale admissions officer emailed him the night before with a question while she was reading his application, so he knows his decision has not been made. He really wanted the opportunity to enhance his written application with the interview.

Interviewer was supposed to call today but didn’t. Again. I’m just gonna let it go. I know they don’t matter much anyways, and she’s clearly too busy and distracted for it to be meaningful.

@ski_racer lol, still no contact from S’s missing interviewer either.

Thanks for the advice! Is it good to do interviews on the Yale campus with seniors when visiting?

Do you know if on campus interviews hold more weight than alumni? Is there a reason they offer it? Are the questions similar to alumni? Thank you!

@notstuy no more weight. The on campus interviews are likely to be conducted by seniors working in the AO. I think Yale is just offering an opportunity for applicants to do an interview of they are visiting the campus. Usually the questions will be directed at the applicant’s interests academic and otherwise, but each interviewer will have his/her own way of going about it. See the first post on this thread on what interviewers are asked to look for. With on campus interviews, the applicant will have more opportunity to ask questions about student life and classes, so I would have some questions on those topics ready. With alumni interviews, there is more opportunity to ask questions about how the school has affected the alum’s career/life post graduation.

my daughter would have to miss a day of school to attend the on campus interview… maybe I will cancel and wait
for alumni interview?

Please also understand that not every applicant is offered an interview. Unfortunately there are not enough alumni volunteers in certain regions to interview all applicants. That having been said, not having an interview should not prejudice your daughter’s application if that turns out to be the case.

Agree with BKSquared, there is a shortage of Alumni interviewers, and some regions are over-represented

Thanks for all the info - I have my EA interview next week, and I applied as an art/English major. I am really involved with visual arts(I submitted a portfolio with my app) and I would love to talk about some of my work when that part of my application arises. Should I bring some documentation of my pieces to the interview?

I would find that interesting as an interviewer.

What can I do to get an interview?
