With your EA admission in hand, are any of you applying to other schools? If so, where?

I had Middlebury's pre-application (and fee, unfortunately) in because it was due the 15th and I wanted it to go in early...it was one of my safeties. Now, I'm going to withdraw that application, because there is no way I will end up there. I'm applying to Princeton RD to compare financial aid offers if I get in there - if I don't, then I can live with Yale for $13,000/year. Not bad...:)

Are you applying anywhere else?

so far, Harvard and Princeton... to compare financial aid as well. I already sent the Amherst pre-app, so I figure I might as well apply there as well.

I was going to apply to Harvard also, but I decided against it at the last minute. Princeton is the only other school I really liked that has a great undergrad architecture program, and its atmosphere was great (even though it paled in comparison to Yale's). Also, it is typically more generous than Yale (what with no loans and all...).

I'm withdrawing my Midd pre-app because I would feel bad about taking the spot of someone who truly wants to go there.

I think I will apply to Princeton RD as well. I'm also applying to the University of Texas as a financial backup. Yale's aid package (zero dollars) was smaller than expected.

Vivaldi87, with a Princeton financial aid offer in hand, you can bargain down Yale's $13,000.

Davidrune, Harvard will best both Yale and Princeton, simply because they can. Nothing sweeter than a Harvard financial aid offer as a bargaining tool. Just know that Harvard is so accommodating on financial aid - they'll adjust it down right before your eyes, based on your unverified word of honor - that you will have great difficulty turning down their offer of admission. That is why most people can't resist Harvard when Harvard truly wants them.

Thanks Zuma for the advice. Right now, I'm kind of floundering because Yale claims that they don't have enough information to give me any financial aid. Would you say that Amherst aid is competitive?

Stanford because of the 12/1 RD deadline. Sent out Harvard and Princeton before I heard from Yale (so they wouldn't look at the postmark date and think I only sent my app because I was rejected/deferred somewhere else).

Davidrune, find out what's lacking in your Yale file and supply the info pronto. Did you send last year's tax returns? It takes about three tries before SCEA schools (HYS) get your financial aid right. Amherst is out of its league in financial aid competition with Yale. Great school, but it can't compete. 85% of common admits choose Yale.

sprezzatura, you did it just right, if only to avoid the potentially disabling letdown of an unfavorable EA decision.

Hey... give the deferrees/rejectees a better chance by not applying to others lol...

I'm still applying to nine other schools, because I want to keep my options open, especially for financial aid. Right now, it's looking like Yale though, since they gave me $27000 a year. But I'm still applying to Columbia, Northwestern, UNC, USC, Harvard, Princeton, Wash U, Stanford, UVA because my school made me for Jefferson Scholar), and my one unneeded safety, Mizzou.

Zuma, thanks for the info. Where did you get the common-admit stuff?

Well... I'm still applying to Harvard and Princeton... but that's about it. Oh, and I'm also applying to Stanford (my app was already in before I heard of my Yale decision).

Davidrune, here is a quote from Williams. Similar situation with Amherst. I am not now able to put my finger on the Amherst reference, but the Williams situation is ballpark.

I'm still applying to Harvard because they have a BRAIN LIBRARY (I cannot tell you how excited this makes me, since I'm extremely interested in neuroscience) and I love Cambridge. I'm possibly applying to Princeton, though I may nix them since the eating club thing freaks me out. And I'm definitely applying to University of Chicago, and highly considering it over Yale for reasons that seem to be befuddling my parents.

what's the neuroscience major at Yale? Is it Cognitive Science or molecluar biology?

Wow - I haven't posted on this thread in too long.

(Zuma) *Vivaldi87, with a Princeton financial aid offer in hand, you can bargain down Yale's $13,000. *
That is my intention. :) And with what you say about Harvard, I'm thinking about sending in that application too...

Still, I'm nearly positive I'll end up at Yale, though. My sister just graduated from a not-so-generous state school with debt approaching $30,000. If she can do that at a state school, I'm thinking my parents can help me out with ~$40,000 at Yale. ;)

Wow you guys are getting great aid. Would you mind giving the ballpark of your income? My family makes about $79k and I'm getting $22k in grants at Stanford (and paying $17).

My family makes a little less than that (not much less - maybe $75k), and I got $25,000 in grants plus $4,200 in self-help (standard for all students) at Yale (paying ~$13,000).
