I was just emailed by a Yale alumnus yesterday regarding an interview.

This came as a surprise because I have already interviewed on-campus (which did not go too well) and know that this usually puts you at the bottom of the list for alumni interviews.

Yale is a HUGE reach for me, and my parents think that receiving this offer so soon after the RD deadline, especially considering my prior interview, is a good sign.

Is this so, or just standard procedure? Has anyone else interviewed on-campus and received notification of alumni interviews?

Stop. If you get in, you get in, if you don’t, you don’t. Stop trying to read the actions of the Adcoms.

You need to call them. I don’t think you’re supposed to get that invitation too… It’s probably a filing error.

I’m afraid it means your application is complete, and Yale has alumni in your area who have volunteered to interview applicants, but nothing more. At least, that’s what it would mean at the peer institution that I used to interview for.

Sorry, but it doesn’t mean that your chances of getting in are higher- as the person above me said, it just means that you had a volunteer interviewer in your area.

I got interviewed for EA and didn’t get in, not to discourage you or anything.
I’m sure whatever happens, it’ll be for the best!

thank you all for your help! As stated before, I was highly doubtful that this was a “good sign”, as my test scores are below the average and I have no strong hooks.

reneejsim–I’m sorry to hear about your EA decision. was it a deferral or rejection? I was considering applying SCEA, but decided to apply EA to places that would give me merit money.

The name of all students with a completed app go to the alumni coordinator for your area. Neither the school or the alumni interviewer knows if you’re a viable candidate at this point.

As an ivy alumni interviewer, I do wish they’d screen. This year most I’ve interviewed have no real shot.

2college2college-thank you, and I was also wondering-do you see the applicant’s credentials? this probably varies between schools, but is it their GPA and standardized test scores that made them an unlikely candidate for the school? or their achievements?
