Yale & Brown

I'm a junior, but I'm considering applying EA for Yale. (I can't apply ED for Brown because it's binding and I need to see financial aid offers). So yeah, chances for Yale and Brown?

Gender: Male
Ethnicity: Hispanic
State of Residency: Louisiana
Type of High School: Public (Not charter)

SAT I: 2180 (800 W, 690 CR, 690 M)
SAT IIs: 710 Literature, 690 U.S. History, 650 Biology
ACT: 33 Composite (36 English, 33 Reading, 32 Math, 30 Science)

AP Exam Scores: English Language, 5 - U.S. History, 4 - Biology, 4
Rank: 2/85
^^(My class was about 200 in freshmen year, but we have a huge dropout rate. We have 135 kids now, but I'm guessing about 85 will get a diploma).

EC's:
Debate - 9, 10, 11, 12 (Captain) [State Runner-Up: Lincoln Douglas]
Varsity Swimming - 9, 10, 11, 12 (Captain) [Conference Champions]
Future Business Leaders of America - 10, 11, 12 (President) [National Qualifier]
City Youth Council (Community Service) - 10, 11, 12

My intended major is English Language and Literature - General.
So... what exactly are my chances, anyone?

Your ECs are sparse but solid. Your scores aren’t great, but they certainly won’t render you unacceptable. Because of your hook, I would say you are looking pretty good for all colleges. Good luck.

Hispanic from Louisiana, great rank reasonable scores, good shot.

Thanks!
Also, is it worth applying EA for Yale or should I just wait?

If you don’t have another school that you want to apply early to more, you might as well apply EA.

silverturtle- Alright, I probably will do EA. Also, should I submit a poem of mine as a supplementary material? It’s a page long and won a school contest, everyone thought it was fantastic, etc. etc. It’s a Shakespearian-type thing, and I’m an English major so I thought it might be a good idea…?

Sounds like a good idea to me.

…

I would try and get your reading score above 700, but everything else looks great!

They generally advise against sending supplementary materials. I’d send an entire portfolio if you’re an exceptional creative writer and think it’ll make a difference (ie, if they send it to the English dept, will anyone be impressed?).

AHN1245 - Yes! I’m really hoping that’ll happen when I retake it in the fall haha.

Glassesarechic - I read up on it, and apparently they’d rather me submit a short (1-5 page) piece of writing if I’m going to submit. Everyone, from my English AP teacher to my parents, thought it was my best work yet. But as for impressing Yale & Brown English professors… haha, I’m not sure they would be impressed

I still think that you should send it.

Given your hook, I would say you will probably get into at least one of them.

That’s not going to be a problem. Professors don’t read applications, admissions staff does.

^ The admissions officers can pass on the material to the English department.

But would they bother to?

Hmm… this is a dilemma. Haha. I guess I’ll send that one poem, and nothing else.

…
