Hi, we have a kid entering Yale in August. We are wondering if there is any “Yale bucks” system (besides Eli Bucks for the dining hall) that can be used for other Yale related things, like the bookstore. If so, can you send me information on that?
Thanks.
I don’t think there is anything like that, other than the dining one.
Kids seem to use Venmo amongst themselves. DS has/had a CC for books and such.
My student used his debit card (tied to bank account) for most things, even little things like laundry.
My son also uses his debit card for laundry and other incidentals. He also uses venmo with friends to pay each other.
My D uses her debit card. I do think there are some things they can charge to their Bursar account, but my kid is not allowed to do that so I am not sure if that is an option anymore.
^ IIRC that includes the bookstore, but I agree with not using the bursar account for things like that so as not to have to remember to check that account for a balance due.
@ralopate Kids can still use their ID’s at the bookstore, laundry machines and other Yale venues to charge items. The purchases will show up on the bursars bill which you can access online. As noted above, Venmo seems to be very popular at Yale. The summer before freshman year I set up an account at TD Bank (located right by old campus) so my child could get cash whenever needed. Didn’t end up setting foot in the bank the whole year. Kids seem to do just about anything to avoid using cash. Go figure.
They can pay with debit/credit card for laundry ?
Yes D pays for laundry with debit card from home credit union. Rarely uses cash for anything.
Are the washers and dryers wifi enabled, so that you are notified when your cycle is done?
Apparently, not only can you pay without having to have a sock full of quarters, you can monitor the state of the laundry room:
