Campus cash -- to start an account or not to start an account!

Can any current students comment on using the Campus Cash option on their NYU ID cards?

Are there advantages/disadvantages to using Campus Cash? If so, what are they? Do many students use it?

NYU > NYUCard

I'm a parent of current NYU student. this is how freshman will pay for their laundry if they do it in the freshman dorm laundry (it is different for the upperclass dorms, more expensive too)

There are alot of merchants that take the card too. when I want to give my son $$ for books, I put it on the card.

They can load cash on to the card at school, but if the parent wants to put $$ on the card with a credit card they charge you $1.50 no matter how much money you add to the card and no matter which credit card you use.

FWIW...

Basically, I only use Campus Cash for laundry. All NYU dining halls and book/computer stores take it as well. Some merchants (among my favorites Au Bon Pain and Space Market mmm...) do take Campus Cash, but it's basically an easy way to make sure that the money goes towards school-related things (books, laundry, stuff like that). Ultimately, it's a limited debit card.

I used it for laundry, vending machines, Chipotle, and Starbucks when I ran out of declining dollars. Mmm yum! It was helpful when I was low on cash and it was necessary for laundry. I found myself looking for places that took Campus Cash. It was a relief to have at least for the first few months.

NYU website says about Campus Cash:

"Saves Money – On-line Merchant Coupons, Monthly Specials, and provide great discounts."

Anything special here that makes it really worth using Campus Cash instead of a bank debit card?

As a commuter student, would you advise that I...

1) get a campus cash card
2) use declining dollars for dining
3) simply use cash for everything

You don't have to get a "Campus Cash" card...all Campus Cash stuff is administered through your NYU ID. If you have a meal plan, you automatically get declining dollars, though how much depends on which meal plan you get. As a commuter student, there's not much you can do with Campus Cash, since you'd be probably doing laundry at home...I think it's primarily a way for parents to make sure that money is going towards NYU related things (in my opinion) since you can only use Campus Cash at dining halls and select restaurants/cafes in the city, as well as, obviously, the NYU Bookstore/Computer Store. If you ever need money on your card, you can always simply do it online, getting an account is really fast and simple.

I'm confused...can you withdraw cash with your card as well as being able to swipe it? Or do you have to get a debit card from the bank?

I was waiting to receive an actual "campus cash" card, I hadnt realized it was associated with the NYU ID

thanks for the info, I also thought there would be an actual 'campus cash' card. I guess I'll just use cash for everything, it'll be easier. It's not like nyu's the type of school to reject cold hard money.

Use Campus Cash for laundry, at the very least.

Which dorms is campus cash laundry available?

so as a commuter student, I'm guessing it's smarter to have cash instead of the campus cash thingy, because I'll be doing laundry at home

I think all the freshman dorms use the NYU ID card for laundry. I don't think they accept cash.

Anna,

You can't withdraw from the Campus Cash account (at least not until you graduate or leave NYU officially.) Best to get a bank debit card.

The fee to deposit money in the account using a credit card online is now $2.00........

NYU website says there are sometimes discounts and online specials for Campus Cash merchants. Are they good deals?
