Yale Class of 2017 RD Discussion thread

Accepted! So happy!

Sorry runnerxc :(

I was afraid this was going to happen.

A no for ds. Georgetown, here he comes. Most likely.

Dayum, their financial aid sucks. :frowning: Anyone know much about the appeals process?

That’s interesting. I found Yale to be the most generous of all the schools my son applied to. :o

Accepted, so excited!!!

I didn’t even consider applying until the last week of December, so this is super awesome! It wasn’t even until I had an amazing alumni interview that Yale became my top choice. Now I’m itching to see the campus for the first time!

To everyone, accepted or not, good luck!

Aw, really? Because it placed my parents’ contribution at over 3X what they could afford. I showed it to them and they balked. Maybe an error? Or are we secretly loaded and don’t know it? :o Ah well! I’ll snoop a bit.

Perhaps you are loaded. Check out the link below. Princeton, Yale and Harvard are the top 3 privates with the lowest average debt.

http://www.kiplinger.com/tool/college/T014-S001-kiplinger-s-best-values-in-private-colleges/index.php?table=prv_univ&state_code</a></p>

But wait- isn’t Yale’s family contribution at least going to pretend to be similar to the EFC on FAFSA? There our EFC was about 14K, and Yale thinks we can pay 46K. :frowning: Is this a mistake, or does everyone else consider this great aid? No sarcasm intended- I’m genuinely curious, because I expected at least 40K in aid.

^That’s not how FA works for most privates.

FAFSA is for Federal grants/loans/WS, the Profile is used for Institutional FA and each school uses their own calculations from the financial data you give them.

As Kdog said, HYPS are generally regarded as the most generous colleges for FA although some of the other highly selective colleges can do as well or better under some circumstances.

Are your parents divorced? That can make a lot of difference between FAFSA & Profile as FAFSA only requires the custodial parent and Profile takes both into consideration.

^ Sounds like it could be a mistake. At least, you should definitely contact the FA office and find out what’s up.

^^ I would also recommend that your parents call the FA Office and ask for an explanation. Without knowing your situation, it does sound like a mistake.

Sorry for asking this, but what is the link to the Portal? S thought results were coming out Monday.

We found it. S was rejected! Looks like Columbia!

@sstterry congratulations to your son for getting into Columbia!

Is the FA office number (203) 432-2700 not working for anyone else?

I’m getting a message that the office is closed Jan 21 and Jan 22, but it is nowhere near those dates right now o. O

It’s Good Friday, so they probably have the day off today and forgot to change the outgoing message. Call back on Monday.

Is easter this Sunday?

After calling the FA office (same # as you, ccuser95) and getting some automated message about being closed on January 21 and 22, of all days, I’m kind of appalled. At least automate a new message with the correct dates! For all we know, the zombie apocalypse swamped Yale on January 23, thus preventing any chance of the FA office taking down the last recording. Is Friday, April 29 really so hard to record in place of Monday, January 21? Does every employee in the FA office have a terrible lisp that prevents them from vocalizing all their F’s and P’s, and thus must revert to a three-months-off date with M’s and J’s? Great scott!

Entomom, watchmesoar, gibby-

Lots of thanks. Yes, it does appear to be a mistake, doesn’t it? I’ve talked seriously with my (non-divorced, custodial) parents, and tragically, we are not secretly loaded. Though I swear one uncle does look like a mob boss…

Entomom, your info is invaluable. Thank you. I actually think it’s an error in our CSS Profile, since that might be affecting institutional aid from Yale. Then again, I called the FA office and got some automated message that thinks we’re still in January, so what do I know? :/

Gibby, should my parents call or should I call? I want to sound credible but nice, and my parents tend to bluster angrily a bit over the phone. Also, something about thick Asian accents should be mentioned. Or does this matter much?

Maybe I should fax them or something. Advice?
