Castro and Chavez are more like Lenninist-Marxists, Lenin redefined Communism, Stalin and some of the other countries you mentioned made it more abrasive, But Cuba, Cuba I think it worked, I think it was better than the alternatives they had, US occupation and wealth extraction. China is also working, but it’s not really communism. It’s more old school chinese leadership than anything, bringing back Confucianism and Legalism. Chinese get called communists because they supress some human rights, but that’s not communism at all.

I respect sciences alot, and I plan on continuing to learn stuff like Math, Comp Sci and Physics, but the state of the humanities is just distressing. Where are the Aristotle’s man? the Archimedes? You can’t just separate these things.

That is what I wanted to hear. Some one that understands the reality of the situation! Someone that really knows whats been going on! Lenin was a great revolutionary (rallied thousands of thousands of Russian workers before he took up power) Castro was in the same league as him. Both committed crimes obviously, but they still united their countries. China is not really communism because of the methods they use, but it is similar to what you said in Confucianism even though not completely.

I will say that Trostsky’s ideas were definitely more favorable when compared to Stalinism. Although I oppose some of his ideas, specifically the dictatorship and international affairs, his version of communism is definitely more true to the original Marxist ideas.

One thing that is always interesting to realize is just how much different the world would have turned out if the Mensheviks were to win instead of the Bolsheviks at the time. Their two paths were severely different and would have surely left the state of World War 2 different.

I’ve been stalking this board for months expecting to see a lot of talk about Yale. I come here today and all I see is history stuff. I’ve been forced to make an account. more yale please :c

@matrixsurgeon I agree about Cuba/Vietnam/USSR/etc. - none of those are ACTUALLY Communist. Neither is the society which I’m planning to write about - but it certainly came close… ;)

This might sound crazy but I am thinking about writing a Manifesto for a political and social system of government that I and my friend thought of. It draws from all the current systems and seeks to improve the situation! Who knew that creating a type of government was so interesting!

What major(s) is everyone considering at Yale? I am interested in three programs: Environmental Studies, Global Affairs, and History of Science, Medicine, and Public Health. Yale’s assortment of unique majors are just so extraordinary!! Stuff like “Physics and Philosophy” and all the Classics stuff.

As my username might hint at, I want to pursue a career in medicine as a physician. But I want my undergraduate degree to have a focus on interesting things and not just traditional biology, chemistry, physics, and calculus.

@matrixsurgeon If, by some ludicrously minute chance, I actually get into Yale, we CC-ers need to either join or form a Historical/Political Debate Society And, as you probably know already, I am a History major! Might dabble in computer science too :)

@LAMuniv Oh Lord it’s been years since I was in a theater class… man do I miss it… good luck! :)

I am thinking that a Historical/Political Debate Society is perfect! That is, if by some miracle I am admitted into Yale. Maybe we can make it a secret society and have it run on for centuries??? Haha

I’m Philosophy + Lit most likely, but maybe Computer Science. It’s tough, I have to think of my family too, they’re all kind of expecting me to do something that makes money…and I’m both interested and good at Comp Sci. But I don’t really care for studying it in a classroom, I just need people there to unstick me when I’m stuck.

Picking courses will be a nightmare, I just have four years in school, I’ll want to like quadruple major lol.

I’ve always wanted to do Mock Trial! I’m a Model UN-er right now, and it’s great! I’ve even started using phrases like “The chair smiles upon that motion” and “Point of inquiry?” in everyday life…

I want to be a Cog. Sci. major. My goal is to be a pediatric psychiatrist. If Yale had minors, I’d take theatre, but no. So I might just take some theatre classes. I have this secret desire to be an actress, but it’s very unlikely that’ll happen.

Oh, and Mock Trial sounds like fun. Model UN too.
