Yale Class of 2018 RD Discussion Thread

I had my interview today. I ended up actually knowing my interviewer so it went pretty well!

Just a quick question, but I’m kind of working myself into a tizzy here. Does Yale require the SAT Subject Tests under any circumstances if I submitted the ACT plus writing?

@Leonarda - According to their site not necessary with the ACT w/ writing unless required by certain departments for course placement.

@leonarda Not required, but you can still send them if they’re high!
My friend also received a likely letter from Yale. It seems like it’s only for STEM students.

Got contacted by my interviewer today. Yay…

Yea… I got invited to Yes-W, which is a “likely” letter event for STEM students… I am going to assume most likely letters go out to athletes and top STEM students.

Anecdotally, I would agree with Cano. I know of some non-Athlete and non-STEM likely letter recipients; I interviewed one a few years back. But they seem to be in the vast minority.

Go to the Yale 2016 rd results thread. There should be someone under the username “modest423” (his sat was 2350) who got a non yes w likely letter. His resume was OUTSTANDING.

That is one exemplary candidate! Very deserving!!

Hi there everyone, I’m kind of a lurker when it comes to threads but I’d just like to ask what ya’ll wrote about it your essays (especially the free topic one) :-/ I wrote a risk essay about nearly dying

@09755149lan, I’m the stage manager for my school (I’m in charge of set changes, tech crew, and everything that happens backstage and onstage during a school production) and I have to give an announcement before each show. I have to walk out onto the stage in front of ~450 people and deliver a speech (no cell phones, n recording, emergency exits, etc). I am TERRIFIED of public speaking, and I’ve given this announcement over ten times, but I still can’t sleep the night before I give it. I wrote about the first time I walked on stage to give it (yes, I spent 499 words talking about walking onto the stage, before I actually gave the announcement). My main CA essay was about trying (and failing) to fix a vacuum as a germaphobe. I chose odd essay topics…

LAMuniv, you are far from alone in having negative anticipation of public speaking. You have done it 10 times; congratulations for doing so in spite of your fears. It probably made for a good essay.

Had my interview today, it was good even though it was a little short ~30 mins. I’m kind of getting sick of interviews though. :frowning: be March 27 already!

anyone got any acceptances from other schools yet? I’ma US citizen living in Australia and all my friends are all enrolled in university and set to start in March (or have been admitted and have now deferred for a gap year) and I’m still painfully waiting on 12 US schools. Got a very handy acceptance at the University of Melbourne though :slight_smile: still, I want to wait to be over!

@SummerAus Congrats on that acceptance!
I’d also like to know right know. I just finished testing today which means I will have nothing left to do (beside FA applications). I won’t have to apply to German universities till June/July either. It’s scary how uncertain my future is at the moment.

@SummerAus @book05
It must be both wierd and awesome to apply to universities in different countries! I was going to apply to several UK schools but then I realized that they barely give any financial aid to foreigners and its not smart to go out of country for premed years or med years if you want to get a top-notch residency in the US. Good luck to yall!

@matrixsurgeon
It’s great to have a backup which happens to be very inexpensive (German universities are basically for free).
It was/is just a lot of work to apply to an American college. I spent so much money and time getting translations, trying to understand the application process, and so on but I chose to do so and hope it will pay off. :slight_smile: Good luck to you as well!

@book05 I’m pretty much feeling exactly the same. Australian unis aren’t free but they cost about a tenth of what American unis do and are comfortably affordable. The application also takes about 30 minutes and costs $25 for 12 schools. I have spent so much extra time and money on the US, so I really hope it turns out in my favour! All the best to you

@SummerAus
Good luck to you as well! Let’s hope all the efforts will pay off. If not, we will at least have tried (that’s what I keep telling myself haha)

I think that I am wired the same way. I would rather have tried and failed (via rejection/waitlist) than wonder the “what ifs.” The optimistic part of me is hoping for the best results but the practical and logical part of me refuses to hold more than just hope.
