Yale Class of 2019 SCEA Discussion Thread

Was anyone contacted for interviews?

I do interviews for Yale. It does not affect your admission decision whether or not you are interviewed. It is solely dependent upon the number of alumni in your area that can do interviews or whether or not you go to the school for one. Of the 30,000 applicants, many, many are accepted without interviews. I was accepted in the dark ages without one.

Backup documentation can be sent in after the deadline, but not too far after. The admissions committee knows that students cannot control their teachers and counselors, despite their best efforts. Just make sure whatever you need to turn in was on time.

@sumobats - you don’t apply to Yale for any particular major. They just ask that on the application. You do not have to declare your major until the end of sophomore year and a good number of students change. My D changed from Classics to Literature and may yet change to something else.

Ok, so I know that not everyone is offered an interview, that it may depend on your high school. I am just confused as to whether or not they will conduct the interview at school. Thanks in advance!

Yale is also starting Skype interviews this year so the pool of potential interviewees will increase.

The face-to-face interviews are with local alumni volunteers who usually schedule them at a coffee shop, their office, or other public or semi public venue.

@Tperry1982‌ - I think it’s great that you take the time out of your day to help us all with the admissions process at Yale. You know so much and reading your comments has been a valuable resource for all of us.

So, I just wanted to say, on behalf of the CC community, thank you. :)

Just want to say I’m having my alumni interview this Sunday at my local library! Excited but nervous…

@kqguo10‌ , this is a stressful year for you and your cohort, but the thing you should be least nervous about is the alumni interview. Most of the interviewers are very skilled at putting the candidates at ease. Enjoy the interview and good luck on your application.

I’m doing my first interview Tuesday at a Panera. I will probably buy him a cup of hot chocolate and a muffin or something. I always do that and it goes a long way to putting the student at ease. We are there to have a conversation with you. To get to know you beyond what’s on the paper.

If you want to have an interview at Yale, go on the website and navigate to the interview section. You will see what dates and times are available.

Again, neither is mandatory. I am excited for all of you and the CC parents of Freshman there currently look forward to some of you, hopefully, joining our kids next year.

A thought just occurred to me. Would QuestBridge Finalists still be offered an interview due to the shortened time frame? I read about this on Brown’s website and wasn’t sure if this applied to Yale as well.

Hey guys, just thought i’d join the thread! i’m an international that applied to Yale SCEA, looking to major in Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations. I have my alumni interview in about a week’s time so hopefully it all goes okay

So I sent my scores to Yale about a week ago and it’s still pending! &I know someone is going to bring up the four weeks situation but my friend did about a day before (to another ivy league) without rush reporting and his were processed the same day. Does anyone think that this’ll negatively impact my application?

I sent my scores last week Monday and Yale had them on Wednesday. I am not saying freak out, but to be on the safe side get a hold of college board and ask what the hold up could be, cause I don’t think it’s on Yale’s side they pretty much declare on the application checklist site that they check for scores obsessively. All the best on getting things sorted!

Hey, I sent the application on Nov 1. I haven’t received the Eli Account though. Should I e-mail Yale?

No, don’t call. The Yale website says you will receive your Eli Account within three weeks of your submission, so don’t get in touch with them yet. Hope you get your account soon. Best!

My son sent his application on Nov 1. He has not received the Eli account either. I hope it is sooner than three weeks.

They seem to be sending them on Mondays, so don’t fret very much. :)

I sent in my application Nov 1st (in the morning though) and have received my Eli account.
