I'm a student who's thrilled in Communication & Media. Unfortunately, Yale does not have a department/major in such field. The only close majors are Film Studies or Drama (both of which I feel are very different from Communications). Yale has been my dream school for gazillion years and I still do hope that I get accepted in April. But now that I look more closely at curriculums & academics at Yale, I don't know what to do..
Any suggestions on how I can still delve into Communications & Media at Yale University?

I was reading Heewon’s post just a while ago
and then I found this post written by me with same the same title and content
Don’t know how it happened T.T
I’m soooooo sorry everyone :-(

Don’t worry about it eligirl I guess your computer had a weird cloning moment.

Heewon, I don’t know if it’s the same for all the majors but when I contacted the department of the major I’m interested in they said it’s possible to almost kind of “build” your own major so you can include the things you’re interested in.

That said, if you know that’s what you want to study you might just be better off going somewhere that definitely offers it. You might find that when you discover a school with a major that excites you then Yale may not seem so much of a dream school anymore. Ultimately, it’s all very well and good going to Yale because it’s the dream… but if you’re not studying what you want to be, it’s just not worth it.

OP, If accepted try to contact the Dir of Undergraduate Studies in the American Studies department and ask her for advice. Explain what about the communications field interests you and see what faculty at Yale have to offer. It wouldn’t surprise me if several people have research and offer coursework in Communications that would interest you.

Wow, thanks everyone. I didn’t know I could be like a pioneer of my own major at Yale ^^
Thank you so much!!!

Yale isn’t going to allow you to say you’re a Communications major. You have lots of wiggle room under the auspices of other, established Departments and your degree will be conferred by one of them – even if your actual concentration is in Communications/Media.

Yale’s liberal arts stance has flexibility but not to the degree where new majors are added frequently. Good luck to you
