haha yeah yeah. my essay wasn't even too good, there were a lot of little mistakes because i ran out of time to proofread, and i didn't delve into any of my references, i merely alluded to them, even though they did fit into the general idea of each paragraph.. i wrote about.. kurt vonnegut, george orwell, ayn rand, karl marx, russian revolution, communist china and the cultural revolution, mahatma gandhi, martin luther king jr, and math team

:) it was kind of a hodge podge of whatever i thought of at the time.

but then again, i can make the same argument for the mc section, which happens to generally be my weakest section (though if u could superscore the essay and the mc...; and i'm not biased at all ;))
it tests your understanding of basic grammar, so most people with decent english get a decent score on the exam. then the difference between a 'decent' score and a great one is pure memorization of grammar rules and idioms that otherwise have no bearing on how well you write. it's merely a test of how much preparation you put into it or how much of a grammar-nazi you are.

all in all. i kind of take the writing section for what it is. i agree that it's not perfect, and i actually think that the reason why success on the writing section correlates to freshman year grades is that the people who tend to spend time preparing for the writing section would be more likely to study harder as a freshman in college. it's just a theory. but i didn't do poorly on the writing section and i'm not ratting it out. just.. i personally don't think it's as "important" of a section as say, critical reading (well, discounting vocab :P).

don't shoot me. :)

I came out of the test thinking that my essay was the best thing I did on the test. But, I write small, and it only came out to be 4 paragraphs. Turns out, I get a 2390 and a 10 on the essay. Go figure.

haha yeah it's all pretty arbitrary, i though i did better on the essay the second time i took it, but my essay score dropped by 4 points?

gahh whatever. let's just be happy we're done (hopefully!) with the testing.

yup, milessmiles. I think it said somewhere on the Barron's or Princeton Review book that there was a "direct correlation" between length of essay and score. Of course, it's not causation, but still -- they do care about length.

BY the way, that is some daunting SAT stat you got there. :)

haha yeah. i'm jealous :P

It better count for something.
That's my highest section (790 with 10 essay.)...I was really proud of it too because the first time I took the SAT I had a 580ish W

I agree that the essay is a joke. The MC is reasonable though..a lot like the English? section or whatever of the ACT so I don't see why colleges wouldnt consider the SAT Writing...
(Of course I'm a bit biased here because I really want the W score to count. hahah)

milessmiles--wow! That's a great score you've got there! i'm wayyy jealous too.

Haha, I got a 790 with an 8 on the essay. Seriously, my essay was horrible, but I did manage to get every MC question correct. Yay me!

Wish I could say the same about Math, though... :(

My Writing was a 770 with a 10 essay, 1 omit, 1 wrong. I went $%# $%@ %$# when I saw it. I mean, what kind of curve is that? I was expecting at least 20 more points.

Other than that, I was pretty happy.

:p

And by Gawd, Yale better take that Writing into consideration! I don't expect equal consideration, though, because I know how arbitrary the section can be, but still...

oh my gosh i hope they consider the writing section. I got a 790 also :) my math score was horrible....

and what do you mean the writing section is arbitrary? the mc's are completely legit, IMO
...but the way they grade the essays is not

^I'm sorry. Not arbitrary in that sense. I meant that it was is not as hard as the other two sections to score a 700+ with just a bit of refreshing on the grammar rules. But then again, everyone is different.

If they don't care about writing SAT its because they get 3 pages worth of writing from your essays.

Caring is sharing, it can be fun?

I read somewhere that they do consider it for admissions though. It was on a list somewhere.

They should just remove the essay section..
That way we get out 25 min earlier and dont have to worry about it bringing our W score down (it doesnt show anything about your writing abilities at all..)

But the writing MC is basically the english section on the ACT
So it should be considered..

Huh weird. Everyone in this thread except for me seems to have their W score somehow lowered by the infamous essay section. For me, it's the only holding it up, though. I'm not too good with grammar. I don't speak English that good :)

...that well!

I really hope you were kidding ^^^
he obviously meant it as a joke.

haha if you want to see bad curve, i got 3 wrong and 8 essay-->700.
3 wrong for CR-->740. in a different month, someone i know got 3 wrong and a 770 :(

3 wrong, 12 essay -> 760 :/

And the middle 50% of the Class of 2007 had SAT scores between 700-800 for Critical Reading, 700-790 for Math, and 700-780 for Writing. Those are not the numbers reported by a school that "doesn't care about SAT, period."

Well, it could just be a coincidence.
