Yale Essays

I am planning on applying to Yale EA. I've contacted the admissions office and told them about my unusual circumstances where I will be spending next year overseas and asked if I could submit application information early. I am wondering if these essays will be the same for applicants to the class of 2010.

I am going to be spending the summer in Brazil and want to get my essays basically done beforehand so they only require minor tweaks and editing afterwards. I know I am thinking waaaay ahead here, but I'm neurotic, so. Thank you all!

I don't think the topics change - they're all relatively open-ended anyway, so it shouldn't matter even if they do change slightly.

Well, if they continue to use the common application there is always the "Topic of Choice" option, so you can basically write an essay about anything and be able to use it. I have no idea about the Supplemental Essay though...

The supplemental essay, I think (?), usually calls on you to write about a meaningful extracurricular activity.

It did for the class of 2009!

Did it really? How?

Haha so I'm guessing.

"Tell us something about yourself that does not come through in the rest of your application"

"Talk about a meaningful extracurricular activity"

"Submit page 217 of your autobiography"

etc etc etc are pretty standard?

For the Common App., you need to pick one of these:

"Evaluate a significant experience, achievement, risk you have taken, or ethical dilemma you have faced and its impact on you."

"Discuss some issue of personal, local, national, or international concern and its importance to you."

"Indicate a person who has had a signifi cant influence on you, and describe that influence."

"Describe a character in fi ction, an historical fi gure, or a creative work (as in art, music, science, etc.) that has had an influence on you, and explain that influence."

"A range of academic interests, personal perspectives, and life experiences adds much to the educational mix. Given your personal background, describe an experience that illustrates what you would bring to the diversity in a college community, or an encounter that demonstrated the importance of diversity to you.

Topic of your choice.

There is also a short question: "What talent, accomplishment, or pursuit has given you the greatest joy or satisfaction?"

Yale asks you to expand on the short question into a full essay.

Basically, the ones on Yale's page are standard.
