Hi Guys! In case any of you have applied to Yale-NUS as well, please do comment and share any experiences or advice you might have.

I applied to Yale-NUS by selecting the option on Yale's application and just today, I got an email regarding the interview. Had a few doubts...
What sort of questions are the interviewers asking?

It has been mentioned that Yale-NUS will be paying for flights, accommodation etc. in April for students to check out the campus. Does this included flights from any country?
Also, is this just for selected candidates or deferred ones as well (since it is going to be held in April and Round 3 would still be pending)?

Another pressing matter is that of financial aid. Though there seems to be quite a few need-based and merit based aid programs, the details about the work bond are unclear. Somewhere it has been stated that the bond is for 3 years. Is there anyone with more clarity about this issue? Any present students perhaps?

The interviews are pretty informal. They’ll ask you about your interests, what made you consider Yale-NUS/why you want to go there, what you like to do for fun, your favorite subjects, your favorite book, etc. Skype interviews are about 30 minutes long, I believe, but there’s time at the end to ask your interviewer questions or to talk about something that the interviewer hasn’t asked you yet.

If you’re an international student, Yale-NUS will pay for your flights/lodging/meals/etc for the Experience Yale-NUS Weekend. So yes, from any country— or at least, they pay for your flight from the nearest international airport. And yeah, I believe it’s for admitted students only.

@TrinidadJames22 … I am replying to the post you made in the Yale thread here. My interviewer asked general stuff like: something brief about myself, favourite subjects and why, my ECs, what I thought about living in a hostel and stuff like that. It was just 30 minutes.
And yes, the curriculum is BRILLIANT, isn’t it? The Core subjects offered are soooo apt. As someone planning to major in Econ, I was overwhelmed by the various interesting majors and minors offered. The best part is that a Yale-NUS student can avail amazing Study Abroad and Internship opportunities of Yale-NUS, NUS and YALE!!

But yes, Singapore is a “fine” city . Has a lot of fines!! Pretty sure drug usage would be illegal there. But the college seems too good to let go if you do get admitted, right?

@Conscience13 Yea, I’m definitely considering it. It seems like a great opportunity and I’m really glad (and surprised) they considered me even though I neglected to submit my scores and do their optional essay. I would still go to Stanford, Yale or Brown in the unlikely event they accept me, but after that NUS is pretty appealing,

This might be a really unique global opportunity too, Europe and America aren’t inaccessible where I am, but Southeast Asia seems like a world away.

my interview was casual except he also wanted to talk about academics. He asked me what AP courses I took and than picked one and asked questions about that subject. I was a bit nervous because it felt like a quiz or something. Is this normal?

@hotspurs …Yep! Same thing happened to me. Yale-NUS interviews seem a bit more direct than other ones. My interviewer asked me what my favourite subject was. Since it was economics, I was asked why and how knowledge of Eco would help my nation etc etc. So basically, that is very normal!

@konikamano ohk! thanks for the info! btw, that bond is required only if one takes the govt. aid. It doesn’t apply if you take only Yale-NUS aid and not the govt. one.

The government aid is like 15k, right? That’s what he told me, but I don’t know for sure. Either way, it’s rough if you need the aid. Since you have to work in Singapore for two years, does that mean they’ll help you find a job, then?

Yup…it’s 15k. So without govt aid, the tuition fees will be 45k p.a. And this is not including Food and board I think.
And I remember reading that it is a 3 year bond. Are you an international? Do keep in mind that you can either work in Singapore or a Singapore-registered company that is located in any country other that Singapore. So if there is one in your home country, you could work there.

Students will be free to choose whatever job they like. I guess yale-nus will help. Especially because it is a new institution and it will want to make sure that it’s students are getting jobs in well-placed companies. Also, the batch size is pretty small, so it won’t be difficult for them to help everyone out with job stuff.

2 days!!! the acceptance rate is that low because they take just 200 students. But from past year results, looks like most of those who get an interview are either accepted or at least waitlisted. So, don’t worry!
