Yale SCEA Policy Questions

Hey!

So I just wanted to make sure that I can apply to Yale SCEA and:

  1. Apply to UPitt (Rolling admission)
  2. Apply to UMich Early Action (State School, but I reside in Wisconsin)

Thanks so much!!

Yup. For public unis, it does not matter if you are in-state or OOS.

@skieurope

What if I get accepted to Yale SCEA? Could I apply to the RD of other private schools?

@RoundGenius: read the link. Yale’s SCEA program is non-binding.

In general EA = non-binding

ED = binding.

@RoundGenius: Yale does NOT require students accepted in the SCEA round to tell them of their decision until May 1, 2017 – after they hear back from all their other RD or private schools. So, yes students can apply RD to as many colleges as they want while applying to Yale SCEA.

Keep in mind though, Yale defers and rejects MORE students in the SCEA round than they admit. In fact, last year, 83% of SCEA applicants were NOT accepted: http://news.yale.edu/2015/12/15/795-early-action-applicants-admitted-class-2020

@T26E4 Thank you!

@gibby I know I probably won’t get accepted, but I have to take a chance!

Yes you can apply to other schools. The reason Yale does SCEA, where you don’t have to commit till May, is that ED, in a way, favors applicants with more resources. Most students have to weigh financial aid options and just can’t say YES to Yale in December without any other options on the table. This is yet another way that Yale acknowledges that it has to even the playing field. Another good way is that a student’s summer contribution is determined on a sliding scale. This allows students with less resources to take unpaid or lower paid internships during the summer (like their richer counterparts) and not have to worrying about working all summer to make a large sum of money. Yale found that many students of means were able to have these unpaid experiences and their parents would just “eat” their summer contribution - which usually ends up being book or travel money. These internships, summer’s abroad, etc. were then on their resume or their application to post Yale programs.

Good luck to you.
