Got waitlisted. Anyone know what the chances are to get off the waitlist?

Yep, I’m an alternate! I’m actually thrilled; I was expecting a rejection since my stats aren’t stellar, but I guess that my essays were good enough. I’m hoping that someone declines their acceptance, but I’m so happy for everyone that got in! Congratulations y’all.

I got the acceptance email!!!

However my smartselect is saying that the decision is still pending.

Does anyone else have this problem?

Also does anyone know where to go for the tuition deposit?

I think if anyone that is accepted does not accept the offer, the alternates or wait-listed will have a chance.

Congrats!

Would you like to connect via discord (or other platforms) to discuss further matters?

thank! congrats to you too! sure, i’d like to connect. do you know if we should have received a reply to our email stating that we would like to accept the offer?

I sent my acceptance of the offer email - have not received a response yet.

You can contact me at justinjiang37#2655 on discord!

I got an email a couple days ago with follow-up information from Dr. Faison. It includes a discord server link for admitted students-did you receive the invite?

The previous one expired

Wow - it is in my Junk Folder

Just found it.

Thanks for telling me that

Is there any hope for alternates or have all the slots in YSPA been filled?

Not sure how many slots are left but I know someone got off the waitlist yesterday.

Congratulations! I wanted to ask about what you had to do in order to get accepted and the process itself, because I’m looking to apply next year (when I found out about this program it was too late to apply). Anyways, good luck with the program!

Sorry for the late reply!

Be authentic in your application! I also applied to some other summer programs and I remember revising them over and over again until I ended up with a very mechanical, unauthentic, and overall quite rigid application. For YSPA, however, I remember submitting my 2nd or 3rd draft.

Point is, be yourself. If you proactively found this program yourself, I believe you have the ambition this program is looking for in its applicants. Show that and be unique. Don’t boast about your achievements, but use them to show a unique aspect of your personality. Make it so that Dr. Faison, the program director, would think, “huh, this student would be an interesting addition to this program.”

We are all very excited for this program and I will let you know what it is like after it finishes!
(Though also remind me, I may forget)

Thankyou for replying! I’ll make sure to remember what you said.
( I’ll message you when the program is done as a reminder :] )

Hi again astrosha!

Unsuprisingly, YSPA 2023 has been the best month of my life so far. It is much better than I originally expected which was already a very high standard.

The lectures, staff, students, observatories, projects, and mandatory fun activities are all very well managed and everyone had a blast.

We were all in teams of four with nine groups in total and each group was tasked to observe, analyze, and process data for a supernova, open star cluster, and emission nebula.

I would love to explain them in details and every activity that we did but I believe you would get a much better sense of what it was really like from the YSPA blog.

Every student wrote about at least one day so you really get all perspectives.

Anyways, this was the perfect program for me. I couldn’t have imagined a better, more fitting summer experience than YSPA.

I definitely encourage anyone who has a passion for the cosmos and space in general to apply!

Don’t hesitate to ask questions!
