YSPA 2019!

I don’t think there is a forum yet for YSPA 2019.

Any one else applying? This is legit the coolest summer program I have come across.

Has anyone been to YSPA and if so, can you please share your experience or any application tips?
Thank you!

YSPA 2019 application
Do you know if we have to list math courses as well in the question where they asked about science courses? TIA

@hs2020kid I don’t think so; at least I didn’t. They should see your transcript so they would know what math courses you have taken.

@Jedelm23 - thanks. that is my impression as well - just checking how others viewed the question.

Hi,
Can anyone respond who attended last year? What are the details of the self-study portion of the program? Time commitment, any specific times that were mandatory…could a couple days be missed and made up, is there work on the weekend, etc. Please be as specific as possible in helping me understand the commitment required during those two weeks before the program. Thanks!

Will my application still be reviewed even if my teacher sends in the recommendation letter late? I’ve asked for his recommendation letter in February, but he still did not submit the recommendation letter. I gave him a reminder email, but he’s not replying. What should I do… I spent a lot of times on my essay…

Hi, I’m so excited about the admissions decision on April 6. The supernovae research sounds so interesting and I really like that this program incorporates some Python programming. Anyone who is an international student here?

@mit2024 The recommendation letter deadline is March 17 at 11:59 pm EST (40 minutes before my comment). From your comment time, you still had a day. Have your teacher submitted yet?

@tomb9610 Thankfully, my physics teacher submitted his recommendation 2 hours before the deadline.

I am interested to know as well on the time commitment for self study portion of the program

Do you guys know how many people applied this year? I wonder what the acceptance rate will be

@mit2024 I remember reading a Quora thread that says about 300 people applied last year, so the acceptance rate is about 10%. Not an official source but sounds reasonable for a program like this.

@tomb9610 Yikes, and people think it’s nowhere near as competitive as SSP.

Ive noticed that YSPA has released the results earlier than the dates that they announced they would. I wonder if they’ll do the same this year.

11 days left! Not really related but I’m curious which summer programs do you guys apply for besides YSPA (if you feel comfortable sharing). I apply for UFlorida SSTP (rejected), Rensselaer Research Experience, UMissouri St Louis STARS, Texas State Mathworks, and UMich MMSS (still waiting for decisions).

@Jedelm23 From what I’ve seen perusing the SSP result threads, it looks like it might even be more competitive. Some people who were admitted to SSP were flat-out rejected from YSPA.

@tomb9610 I applied for the NASA SEES program and COSMOS! Rejected from this super cool outdoors program called Inspiring Girls Expeditions, but was to be expected.

Also, I love how this 2019 forum is extremely dry compared to the ones from previous years haha.

@tomb9610 I applied to RSI, SSP, RISE internship at Boston University, and the International School for Young Physicists in Canada. Already got rejected from RSI but I have moved to the matching phase for RISE

Has anyone heard anything? Global Scholars decisions are out apparently. Was hoping YSPA would follow same schedule.

@marvelousmarvel I really love NASA SEES program but unfortunately, I am an international student so I’m not eligible. Seems like you’re a huge astronomy person! Best of luck in getting into one of those programs (although you’re my “opponent” here haha)! And it’s absolutely funny how this thread is so inactive compared to others.

@Jedelm23 Does that mean you are accepted to RISE? If so, congrats! It sucks that international students are not eligible for that. I think it’s an awesome program.

@rileygrl According to YSPA website, decisions will be released around April 6, so 9 days to go!
