I would send the whole thing, and include a summary, no longer than one page in length.

Hey, I got into Yale through Early Action, and I was puzzled about the very same thing! My science research paper (like yours) was around 17 pages (I’m guessing for Siemens/STS?) as well. Through the traditional science fair competitions (up to ISEF) I did very well, but unfortunately, I did extremely poorly at the Siemens competition. For this reason, i decided to simply report the ISEf award on my resume/CommonApp, and NOT send in the paper. However, I think it IS important to send in something to the admissions committee, simply to give them an idea of what all your hard work and dedication is about, so I decided to send in a research abstract (250 words, the one for ISEF). This was my supplement.

However, if you DO think your research paper is well-written and demonstrative of your ability as a scientist, I strongly recommend you send it in. Do you feel good about your paper? Did you win Siemens/STS/other top fairs with it? If so, send it in! If not, just do what I did it worked for me!

Good luck!

Oh and another thing…If you do send in your whole paper, send it in the format rockermcr suggested, with a short abstract (~200 words or so) at the beginning. If you formatted your paper to fit Siemens or STS guidelines, then you should already be set, since they required an abstract.

Most scientific work requires an abstract. I have co-authored some stuff that was published in scientific magazines, and most of the articles were around ~20 pages. Most admissions officers I’ve spoken to have suggested I submit the full article with a short summary, so they can forward everything to a professor in the field in question if they deem necessary.

Best of luck to you. :)

thanks for your advice guys.
@wasian, I won ISEF with it as well, but not simens. that was a tough comp.
I took both of our advices and submitted the one page abstract since it pretty much covers the whole research paper.

by the way, rocker did you mistype in your first post when you said “I would”?

No… To answer your question, I told you what I would do, and thus what I thought you should do. :)

Do people send in huge english papers too? Just wondering…
