I’m finishing up my second year at community college in Washington and really excelled in the last two years compared to high school. After becoming a semi-finalist for a prestigious national scholarship (Jack Cooke Kent Scholarship) I decided to start thinking bigger in terms of where I would transfer, so I applied to Yale.
In the last two years, I have managed a 4.0 GPA, served on the student council, worked for a non-profit, and been active in clubs. In my years between high school and community college, I worked for an anti-sex-trafficking organization where I found my passion for social justice through political science. In addition, my professor shared the recommendation he wrote for me and I was wowed by the contents.
I was an okay student in high school (3.69 GPA) but I had not yet learned to apply myself. I recently received an email from Yale admissions requesting I add a college report that was missing from my application before it heads to a committee in the first week of May. I know that admission decisions come out about May 10th. I want to smack myself for not giving the application every tiny ounce of preparation it deserved but I think when I was applying I did not believe I really had a chance of getting in. There’s a typo that’s been haunting me.
But given the email and the timing, is it fair to hope I might be accepted?
At a 1.6% transfer rate last year, I wouldn’t get too excited. They are likely just making sure that your application is complete.
Fair enough At least it’s higher than Harvard’s acceptance rate lol
I think they require a college report for every app. I think they were reminding you to finish your app.
100% it will not be b/c of the typo if you don’t get an offer!

Thank you for the replies! I’ve got an invite to an interview tomorrow. I hope things go well.
If you got an AO interview, you’ll probably get in.
Yes, it was an AO interview and I feel it went well. The 30 minutes flew by. But I hear plenty of people rock their interviews and still don’t get it. Time to wait

Can you elaborate? I heard Yale interviews don’t necessarily mean anything one way or another, it’s just them trying to get a complete picture to make a decision.
Good luck! I’m sure you’re more competitive than you think. A lot of emphasis is placed on essays, but I agree that a few typos will not sink your chances. Tons of incredible candidates surely submitted typos. We’re all human
Thank you nontrad76! I know interviews aren’t the main decider, but that’s why I was able to relax and have a fun conversation with the interviewer. It was a lot more laid back than I expected, mostly trying to get to know you rather than you trying to prove why you deserve to go to Yale.
If you’re an applicant, best of luck!
