Hey guys,
I really want to apply to the Yale undergraduate art program and double major in Art and French.
In what way will my application be judged differently? I know I have to produce a stellar art portfolio, but what do I do for French? I have done the DELF exams and achieved 96 in A2 and 87 in B1.
To what extent will my sat scores be taken into consideration. (It’s quite low:1400)
Thanks so much!
Yale does NOT recruit by major. All student’s apply to Yale as Liberal Arts Majors, and choose a major during their sophomore year of college. So, whatever students select as their “intended major” on the Common Application has absolutely no bearing on their chances.
The reason is that more than 60% of US college students switch majors during their 4 years of school, so it’s impossible for an Admissions Office to use an applicant’s “intended major” as a recruiting tool, as most students will graduate with a major that is different from the one they wrote down on the Common Application.
Yale asks about your “intended major” to see how committed you are to your interests – the idea being that your commitment, energy and drive is a transferrable skill. So whatever student’s write down as their “intended major” they should make sure they have documented evidence in the rest of their application of their commitment to that major.
While there isn’t a cut-off score, your SAT/ACT score must be within Yale’s range. See C9 data points: https://oir.yale.edu/sites/default/files/cds_2017-2018_0.pdf

As @gibby says, it won’t matter for the major. You can certainly list your achievement for the B1 level in the additional info section. No need to list bot, since B1 supercedes A2 and no reason to list your score - you passed. You can also take/submit the Subject Test and/or AP Test if you are so inclined.
