Because you had a second reader. (Your first reader is assigned to your region, the second is not.) Both readers flagged the same problem.
You’re lucky they asked, they must see something they like. It’s a risky move, not sending teacher reqs from two teachers of core subjects, or from anyone who taught you as a junior or senior.
From the Yale Admissions website:
Recommendations from two academic teachers and one counselor
Request recommendations from two teachers who have taught you incore academic subjects(e.g. English, Foreign Language, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies) who know you well, and who have seen you at your best. It is preferable, but not required, that recommendations come from teachers who have taught you during your junior or senior year of high school.
It’s a very good sign that you got a second reader! About 70% of applications don’t ever get a second read and are filtered out at the first reader stage at Yale.
Your application might have also made it to committee! But the committee needs 4 out of 5 votes for an “admit” so probably need more information for more votes!
I received an email with a student ID but honestly I think that is just a temprary ID that financial aid wants us to use. No specific docs besides the usual tax returns and W2s etc.
When I called Yale FA a few weeks ago, the person I spoke to, told me that SID is for admitted students only. So, that’s great news that your letter had that. We’ll know if I am correct in a week. Best wishes.
Thank you for the best wishes and same to you! But I know this is a really huge reach so I’ll hold off on any celebrations for now. At least they are seriously considering me for aid :)!
Hi, I think Metawampe pointed out the real issue. Every school has some slightly different requirements on what teachers should write recommendations for the applicant. (So ideally, we need to check the admissions page for each school we are applying to, e.g., google “[School Name] admissions recommendations” etc.)
As for applying to Yale, I know someone who submitted one reference from a core subject teacher and one from a debate coach. The student was contacted to submit an additional reference, if possible.
Great thing is that they reached out to the applicant and requested it without automatically denying and not even reviewing it. It’s nice to know they reviewed through the application first.
Hi! weird question - I got an interview request yesterday, just 8 days before the decisions, and our interview is scheduled for this Saturday meaning that the report is going to be back maybe 5 days before final decisions? Could anybody with more knowledge give me an insight onto why it is so late? I have some people in my life speculating this means I am a “borderline” candidate but I don’t want to assume that’s true.
Also - my interviewer is like spookily similar to me, as in I quickly searched for her linkedin and all the programs she did at yale are really really niche programs that I wrote about in my why Yale essay. Does this mean anything or literally just a coincidence?
Thanks - trying not to read too much into this but definitely odd IMO
Many students are often worried about making mistakes or contacting admissions (for legitimate reasons). In fact, many at admissions offices are very friendly. I often tell the students that admissions officers are also humans, parents, friends, etc. They understand how stressful it could be for some students, and how much efforts a lot of students have put into their applications,
So it would only make sense–and be human–to make an effort to find out all the facts about each applicant. So don’t worry too much (but be reasonable)!
I would assume that’s the case. Apparently the deadline for interview reports was today, so I doubt they’d go out of their way to get yours in late if they didn’t seriously need more information to make their decision.
DD’s school counselor said that more and more colleges are deciding to deny admissions to a larger % of EA/ED pool instead of deferring “in an effort to allow students the ability to focus their attention on other schools that will be a good fit.” As we know, Yale flipped to that last year to significantly fewer deferrals. DD believes she rather have the band-aid ripped off than peeled and plans to finish all remaining application drafts by Dec 15. We as parents also think it is good that colleges are moving to that practice. What do you all think?
