Yale University Early Action for Fall 2023 Admission

I love your attitude. Good luck!

Can I chime in with observation?

Looking at the Harvard and Princeton EA admission threads and this one - we are the chattiest and more collaborative/supportive crowd of three. Coincidence?

Does it say something about school’s culture/vibe?

Thank you, everyone, for your support and encouragement, congrats to accepted and deferred, and very best wishes to the rest!

It TOTALLY says something about Yale. My son researched ‘culture’ and things along that line about the schools he applied to. The other ivies did not make the cut and we all agreed that Yale seemed the most friendly, collaborative, fun, supportive, etc.

Thank you for this! I agree 100%! Though it may seem easy for me to say that since my daughter has been accepted, my son (2021) was deferred and then denied. He ended up at Vandy with a full tuition scholarship (the Cornelius), and it was the PERFECT fit for him. My oldest (2019) went to Stanford and my 3rd (2022) to Vandy, as well. Each ended up at the perfect school for them!
If you received “bad” news, know that the perfect college for you/your child is just waiting for you!
Best of luck to everyone with their future paths!

As others have said, Yale doesn’t have separate (academic) colleges and doesn’t admit by major.

The truth is that Yale can make 2-3 classes of students without any loss of quality. So, amazing, hardworking kids are going to get deferred or denied.

And if deferred this year from Yale, that likely means their application was stellar, since Yale deferred relatively few this year.

Kids have gotten a lot more savvy about admissions and more and more are seeing these schools as worth a shot.

Most likely they did nothing wrong—after the parts of your app that you can control, there are factors that are out of your control, like how you fit into this year’s class (whether you provide a unique experience/talent/perspective, because they don’t want a homogeneous class) and how the readers happen to subjectively respond to your essays (whether they went to bat for you).

Finally, these kids are under enough stress. Please don’t imply they did something wrong if deferred or denied from their top choice. There is so much that goes into these decisions and they are an evaluation of how well you meet the college’s needs this year
not an evaluation of your worth as a person or even just as a student.

Understood and agreed. Watching some of the post about kids and their EC - just superb! I do not want the AO’s job for sure!

haha yup! that’s yale’s trademark: man singing yale anthem in an ominous tone while a bunch of puppy clipart do a little jig. you gotta love it.

anyways: i found where the letter was at
if you click on the view status update and the video plays, there should be a button on the bottom that says “close” – it’s really easy to miss!

Good luck to all still turning in applications for the January deadlines!

I may have some major updates to report back to Yale. When would be the absolute latest I should? Mid to Late February?

I would report it as soon as the major updates are ready. I don’t know when deferred files are re-reviewed, and you will want to make sure that info is in your files at that time.

is there a thread for students who got deferred from Yale REA fall 2023?

I did a rough estimation for the admit rate of the deferreds in RD based on this years and last year’s numbers of applications and admitted students:

  • Total accepted: 776 or 10%

  • Now let’s take out the athletes and the development kids to get a “cleaner” acceptance rate. I don’t know the exact number, but let’s use 225. (776-225)/(7744-225) = 7.3%

  • The 1626 deferred represent about 21.6% of the non athlete/development applicants

  • The deferred and accepted represent the top 29% of REA applicants excluding athletes and development.

  • The REA pool is generally thought to be more competitive than the RD pool, but assume they are the same, the top 29% of 43,897 (total applicants from last year minus REA applicants this year plus deferred from this year)= 12,730. These top 29%, which include the deferreds are competing for 1,458 - 66 (QB) spots. So I get a 1,392/12,730, so about an 11% rate.

Thank you for your number crunching. It gives a little hope to the deferred.
When do RD decisions come out for the Ivies?
