I have a 33 ACT (34 superscored) with a 9 in the writing.
I am within the top 5 students in my senior class (I may even be valedictorian, but I am not sure yet)
My AP courses include: Chem, Eng Lang, USH, USG, Eng Lit, Cal AB/BC, and Bio (there are only two AP classes at my school that I am not taking, which are AP Physics and AP Computer Science)
I have a 5 on the Chem, 4 on Lang, and 4 on USH. I'm not sure about the other ones bc I haven't taken them yet. I am an incoming senior, but those are the classes I am enrolled in.
My GPA is 4.0 unweighted.
I have taken two consecutive years of French
I have taken all honors and AP courses (never a regular)
Extra:

2 years of NHS
2 years of Beta Club
2 years of Student Gov't Association
Gov't team
Member of HOSA (and was invited to attend Nationals in Nashville this year)
2 years of French Club
I volunteered for 4 years teaching taekwondo to kids for 5 hours a week
Varsity Cross Country sophomore year

Do I truly have a chance at Vanderbilt or Yale, and am I competetive student. I know my standard tests scores are way up there, but is there anything I can do to better myself?

Vanderbilt yes Yale no. Your scores are average to low for Yale. Have you taken any sat subject tests? And why do you only have two years of a foreign language? Most people have double that.

I haven’t taken any SAT subject tests yet, and in order to take all my AP classes I couldn’t take French III and IV. My school is on a new schedule, so in order to take AP Bio, I had to drop French III and IV.

33 is not low. I don’t know WHERE you get your information curious123, but it is heavily skewed. The average ACT scores for Yale are 30-34 for the 25-73 ranges. His scores are completely solid and place him near the top 75 percent of scorers. You need to get off CC for a while and look at stats before chancing people. Anyway,OP, your Rank and class rigor are amazing, so be proud of them. However, as for ECs, you have a good amount, nothing truly standing out and little leadership. But, you have a great shot at Vanderbily and Yale will be a reach, but it si for everyone, so don’t be discourged. Good luck sir!

Chance me back?

I am going to try to take on more ECs and more leadership positions this coming up year. I am just worried bc my school doesn’t offer that many APs, and they are only open to juniors and seniors. So while I have taken nearly all the APs my school offers, other people have taken tons more than I. I am thinking about taking two more exams though, in addition to my classes (AP Euro History and AP Microeconomics)

^ Dude, that is totally fine! School send profiles about all the classes and how many kids are allowed to take per year. I go to a school with only 3 APs, and I am taking them all this upcoming year. It really is not a big deal. :)

yea, thanks. I wanted to take AP French, but my school doesn’t offer that. Oh well

So does anyone else have any opinions? Thanks.

Your chances are very good for Vanderbilt, since your grades and test scores are very good, but you may have some trouble with your ECs, which aren’t really stand-out or too strong. Just make sure that your essays are the best you can possibly manage, and hopefully your recs will turn out well. As for Yale, it’s a pretty big reach or you, but if you can make your essays distinguish you and clearly show how you will be a good addition to their campus. For the rest of your senior year, I would concentrate on:

Essays

SAT IIs

Extracirriculars – spend a good amount of time on them so you can honestly report you do on your application

Recs

Good Luck! and if you want to chance me back…

If taking French is something you are interested in, could you take it at a local community college? If you were to do that, you would be showing colleges that despite you scheduling conflicts, you are still devoted to taking another language. I have to be honest in saying that only two years of a language isn’t going to compare well with other applicants with four or even five. Therefore, I would suggest that you take at least another year. In regard to your AP’s, don’t worry about the limited amount your school offers, colleges will know that you took some of the hardest classes available, which is what they look for in their applicants. I would also encourage you to(as you plan) hold some leadership positions. It’s difficult to determine your position without any SAT subject tests or an SAT. I think you should take the SAT and see how you do. Overall, from the information you have provided us with, I would say that your GPA uw is as perfect as it gets and your class ranking is good. Just make sure to do all you can balance in terms of ecs and languages and I would say you are on the right track. Good luck!
