I am most definitely applying to NYU Stern this upcoming year- however, I am a little concerned about the financial aid. My mom is a single parent, and she makes about $60,000 per year- (we immigrated to US 5 years ago, if that makes any difference, whatsoever)- so, class of 2014, if you had a similar financial situation, how much fin aid did you receive from NYU?
After perusing through CC, I get the sense that NYU is infamous for not providing generous financial aid and is not need blind.

Dont expect much. My situation isnt exactly the same, my parents are together with my father working as a firefighter and my mom as a part time nurse. We’re middle class and got next to nothing. When we spoke to the people at the Bursar office, the one woman told my parents about a single mother who was putting two kids through NYU. Both kids had very large loans (no specifics were given, just that each student had to take out a considerable amount of money).

When we wrote NYU to see if any extra aid could be given, they basically said NYU overestimates the amount of aid given out, knowing that not everyone who gets into NYU will go, so there really is nothing left to get even after everyone has made their final choice. NYUs price tag is insane, and almost unreasonable…good thing loans exsist.

Side note: Dont let the price tag put you off of applying. NYU is my dream school, and no matter how many people are unsupportive of my choice to attend simply because it costs so much, I’m still happy to be going. Its a LOT of money, but its all being invested into your future.

I couldn’t have put it better myself SnappleSpice.
I only received $9,000 in scholarships- so I had to take out $200,000 in loans.

wow, 200,000 is a bit exorbitant :/

ajrover, I hope you’re talking about $200,000 for four years! I had to take out $27,000 in loans for this year (my first year), and I will probably end up taking out closer to $37,000 for the next three years, since I had some money set aside for college already (years of saving, gone before my first semester…but hey, its all for education). I can see myself being close to $200,000 in loans by the time I graduate.

On a side note, an expense that most people dont realize they are spared at NYU: transportation. You can pretty much walk anywhere in Manhattan, and even if you did travel by subway/bus a lot, the fairs are cheaper than the cost of buying a car and paying the insurance. Just to throw that out there.
