I've heard some bad things about NYUs financial aid, but on their website it says They give on average 30 thousand in financial aid which doesn't seem horrible to me. Does anyone have personal experience with financial aid at NYU where they could give me some insight into how it works?

I don’t know how exactly it works, but I applied ED, had a 3.5 UW and a 30ACT/1990 SAT and got NOTHING only loan offers. My mom has been unemployed for the last 6 months, too. I think that average only is based on those they think have “financial need”.

When they say average financial package, that includes loans. I got about that amount from them in scholarships but from what i’ve been hearing and seeing it is not something that happens to most of the people who get financial aid, they’re usually stuck with loans.

Yeah basically the $30,000 will be composed mostly of loans that you have to pay back, with possibly some merit aid and workstudy added to the mix…but not much, if any at all. SiXELA, do you think you will be able to attend NYU w/o any aid? I am doing ED 2 and I know if that happens to me I will definitely not be able to go. /=

Well, I’m applying for about 35 external scholarships, my mom has just enough set aside for me for the first year, and I intend to work through college, so I think I can just barely swing it. It’s extremely risky though, but hopefully I’ll have enough to pay for most of the remaining 3 years without having to deal with too many high interest loans later on.

Also, I don’t know which school you applied to but, gallatin (where I got accepted) and stern have extremely high hiring rates and starting salary, which definitely makes me think the uncertainty will be worth it later on.

I’ve heard some of the same things about NYU…I know when I went with my sister to an Open House and she asked the financial aid rep about my financial situation and how financial aid would fit in with my package if I were to get accepted…And the woman was like “Uh…” as if she had never heard of financial aid…The most money I’ve ever heard of someone getting in scholarships is 10,000…So I don’t know.

SiXELA295, I’m applying to Steinhardt ED II for Applied Psychology. Good luck with your scholarships!
