My future (until November 1st):
Planning get my latest research project published! I'm thinking it will be by November...hopefully.
I will also be getting my ACT score up. I'm going to take it one more time and I'm hoping to get at least a 33.

THANKS! I'm sure I forgot to include something else you may need, so just let me know!

chance me while I chance you- http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1670747-improving-chances.html#latest</a>
If you can get ACT to 33 you should get into 2-3 of the colleges you have listed above. Go ED to Duke because Duke filled a ton of its class ED. It also has a much higher acceptance rate ED. URM will definitely help.

@Lacoste Well Duke isn’t my #1 at the moment, so I don’t think I’ll be applying ED there. But thanks!

Oh ok

With URM, great grades, and great EC’s, you are a hella competitive applicant. Are you student body president? if so, I really think you can get into all these schools. pick your #1 as your early, because I think you have a very realistic shot at every single one (and Im normally very harsh with my chances)

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1670437-ivy-league-and-top-tier-school-chances-rising-junior.html#latest</a>
Could seriously use advice. Thanks!

@brickthelegend Nope, just SGA - but I’ll definitely be running for student body president!

And thanks - good advice. Having a tough time choosing that #1, though, haha. Looking for a school that has an awesome neuroscience program and great undergrad research. Let me know if you can help! I’ll take a look at your thread, as well.

As long as your recommendations, essays, and interviews are as strong as the rest of your resume, I think you will have some very nice options to chose from when admission decisions come around.

I would recommend applying SCEA to one of Harvard, Princeton, or Yale…chose the one you would most likely want to attend, then apply to the other schools RD if you don’t get accepted outright to the SCEA school, or if you want more choices or an ego boost :)

Thanks for the advice, @BldrDad‌! I’ve been doing more research and I’m definitely leaning toward Harvard SCEA. But I’m actually visiting Princeton today…so I’ll see if that changes anything.

And yeah…that ego boost is enticing.

You’re in great shape! What major are you going for? Take every opportunity you get to be involved! Start brainstorming for your essay and make it stand out. I think half these universities would want you!
Please chance me back http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1672761-chance-me-for-stanford-university.html</a></p>

I don’t want to burst your bubble but your chances are slightly better than most because of your URM status but given that the schools you have chosen have admission rates from 5-15%, your chances are not good. They are bad like everyone else. The hard reality is that you could have a perfect ACT or SAT and a 4.0 unweighted GPA with outstanding ECs and still not get in to the schools listed. That happened to the valedictorian of my son’s high school.

Hope you apply to a good safety school that gives you guaranteed high merit scholarship just in case you do not get in to your listed schools. There are many quality schools out there that have honors program whose students of similar quality as the schools you have mentioned if being with high achieving students is a factor in your decision making.

The science and URM aspects of your application are definitely appealing. If you were to get your ACT scores higher (esp math and science) you will be golden. You would have a serious shot at Harvard EA.

What international competition did you place top 15 in? Intel/Siemens caliber? If so then it would be hard for AdComs to turn you down unless you have some serious problems with your essays or recommendations.

The only problem is the ACT score. I don’t think you would get into these schools with a score in the 20’s, but anything is possible. If you can get your ACT to a 33 or above, you’re in a great position. Even a 31 or above would put you in a good place.

@sgopal2 Thanks! And yeah! It was of that caliber. I competed against a Top 3 ISEF winner. The only worry I have is that I didn’t compete freshman and sophomore year…I didn’t start my research projects until the summer after sophomore year and I got all of my awards junior year. I’m wondering if that will make a difference of how they look at me. What do you think?

@voiceofreason66‌ Yes, I’m totally aware. I’m essentially posting to see if it’s worth me taking the “gamble” to apply to HYP EA/ED. The extremely low acceptance rates are what’s making this decision tough. Thanks!

@235423 Well I already have a 31…maybe you were referring to my subscores? But yeah, I’m aiming for that >33! I’m hoping it’s only up from here!

@kkdubbs Given you know the low odds of getting into the schools you list, it really boils down to whether you want to throw in your application and invest your time and energy for something that is outside of your control. Your stats are very good but you do not have a good shot or are “golden” even if you increase your test scores. It is a lottery for which you should not plan your college decision upon.

That is why I advise that you find a couple of safety schools first. Secure some quality choices then decide on how many if any of these schools really are the right fit for you to spend the time, money and effort it takes to apply.

First thing you should do is find out how much you can afford to pay for school. You’ll get a good idea what school make sense for you right away. If you want specifics to help you decide PM me. Best Wishes and make wise choices.

0% chance. try for your state school.

@kkdubbs‌ For some reason I misread your ACT score and thought it was a 28. Sorry about that. A 31 is pretty good, but as we agree a 33 is a bit better. Still, with a 31 you’re well positioned to get into at least one of these schools but make sure to have a safety as well!

If you made it to top 15 in one of the Intel/Siemens or other high profile competitions, then it really doesn’t matter that you did it in grade 11 vs earlier. Keep in mind that most of the AdCom readers don’t have a background in science. They will rely on faculty members to review your work (abstract/poster/etc) and tell them how impressive it was.

If you are looking for a strong neuroscience program, then keep in mind that Princeton doesn’t have a medical school attached to it. Harvard, Columbia and Duke do. The best research in neuroscience nowadays happens in institutions that have both a great neuroscience program (PhD) as well as links to clinical research (ie medical school).
