YO Chances FO' TECH?

Guaranteed in with a 630 math? I’ve got a 680, and I think that’s pushing it too. Sure, it’s around 40th percentile, but still.

It was the first time I took the ACT. I think my SAT critical reading and writing are high enough for Tech’s standards. So I was thinking my ACT scores in those sections did not matter since they “super-duper” score.

I know my GPA is subpar but my ranking is high if that makes any difference.

a 630 Math isn’t that bad… I’ve been looking at admissions statistics for a while a 3.83 GT GPA is really good. The middle 50% is between 3.76 and 4.0, so I don’t see what the problem is. Plus, females have a better chance…

Would one consider being Hispanic a significant hook at Tech?
[I have a 3.6 GPA, 1970 SAT (680 Math)].

@propane

Your stats seem pretty solid; URM might push you into the accepted pile.

I’m a hispanic too. 3.63 GPA, 2040 SAT, so we have similar stats.

Best of luck to you!

i haven’t applied yet! i’m really debating on whether or not I should…

my GA Tech GPA recalculated is actually 3.97/4.0. I didn’t know they added .5 for AP classes…Does that tremendously improve my chances?

Hey! I know I’m a little late commenting on this thread but I wanted to say you should definitely apply. I got accepted in the class of 2016 with a way lower math score and I’m out-of-state. My ACT scores were E-36 M-26 W-31 and an SAT of 2010 (CR-730, M-610, W-670) From what I’ve noticed, they really care about work experience, essays and GPA. Being a girl doesn’t hurt either! I know their goal is to have a 60/40 ratio this year.

thanks! That makes me feel much better. I might give it a shot.

You’re pretty much in with a 3.97 tech weighted.

Obviously people tend to have higher math scores at Tech because it’s an engineering school, but if you’re total SAT is within normal range and there isn’t anything really below 600, then a weaker math score isn’t going to keep you out.

I don’t think you can say that. Tech’s admission index weights GPA and course rigor much more than the rest of the application, then Math SAT much more than the rest of the SAT.

And it makes sense why they do this. High School GPA correlates much more highly with college GPA than anything else in the application (that’s no secret). The concern with the Math SAT score is that all Georgia Tech majors require Calculus, and that’s the single greatest cause of failing out at Tech. So Math SAT score and Calc AP score are used as a proxy for Calculus performance. At least that’s my take on why they do it.

derp

BanjoHitter: Chance me please! taking into consideration the new stats:

ACT math of 33 + SAT 680CR + SAT 720W (Super-duper scores are only used in evaluation process) (possibly retaking SAT in Jan)
Female, Asian
3.97 GA Tech GPA (will be higher by the time I apply in Jan)
Ranked in 15/550 so top 2-3%
AP Calc AB/BC, Physics C, Bio, USH, Euro, Human, Lang, Lit, Microeconomics, Gov’t
Doing well in my senior year classes
Science team, volunteer work, key club; however i hold no leadership positions…
First generation to graduate high school
SAT II 760Bio 720USH

Thanks! if you don’t mind of course.

A 33 ACT Math converts to a 730 SAT Math according to the USG concordance tables. So that should be plenty to get in.

"Tech’s admission index weights GPA and course rigor much more than the rest of the application, then Math SAT much more than the rest of the SAT. "

does it really? Not challenging you but just curious as to where it says they care more about math sat than the rest.

I mean Tech doesn’t discriminate based on major, so I really don’t see why having an awesome math SAT score would be so important for business, stac or inta… so i feel like overall strength is more important.

I’ll see if I can find the link. After the Michigan SCOTUS case, GT had a faculty meeting (and the transcript was posted online) with the admissions office where they went over Tech’s admission policy. The admissions officer went through the process and specifically mentioned that each student is given an index score which is used for admission. The index was heavily weighted on GPA then Math SAT score. Other factors (CR SAT score, recently Writing SAT score, and an essay score given by a team of internal and external readers) are also factored in at a lower percentage.

Why does Math count? Tech is a technical school and all majors have to take Calculus - even majors where it doesn’t seem to make sense (like business and STAC). Courses are taught from a mathematical perspective. For example, business courses include mathematical modelling of business practices instead of just cast studies.

True, but STAC and business have an easier calc class. I’m INTA and math hasn’t been the easiest but not having a math SAT of 700+ wouldn’t hinder you too much.
