You really don't expect to be shut out of all hotels in the entire Rochester area in early August. (We have to retrieve our kid and send her overseas.) But 82 of 84 hotels, etc. all showed with no vacancy on multiple search engines.

I finally found a room at the RIT Inn and Conference Center, which I gather is an old Marriott.

Why?

Golf. The PGA Championship is at Oak Hill Country Club in Pittsford that week.

Wow! Glad you found a place to stay.

I crashed at my D and SIL’s place last year for the Jazzfest. I’d guess all rooms were booked for that too.
One thing we learned was that the hotels close to campus would raise rates for times like move-in and graduation - supply and demand.

Fortunately, this one place was only on one search engine so if people found it they may have mistrusted staying there, particularly since the first rates listed required government IDs and it’s not a chain.

The only option we could see was $400 for a basic hotel like a Homewood Suites 20 miles away … and when I checked their site, they actually didn’t have any rooms.

Pricing is surprising even for later in August, around the 20th. I have to go up to Rochester for business and was surprised that the airfare from NYC on Jet Blue was as high as it was. It is not yet move-in so something else must be going on then also.
