You CAN get in

I applied to Middlebury along with about 20 other schools because I just wanted to try my chances at some of the best of the best. I'm by no means a great applicant, of course, I'm certainly no slouch.

I've slacked off some through high school to an extent. My unweighted average is about a 95, and I am only 32 in a class of 580. I did well on my tests getting a 2180 on the SAT, and a 33 on the ACT, although these are but average at a school like Middlebury. I haven't been very involved throughout high school. Except for basketball my first two years and a job my junior year, I haven't done much of anything in school. However I went all out on my common app essay, sculpting my 500 words into a metaphor involving walking from the buffett line at Cici's pizza to my seat. I talked along the way about the things that I have had to overcome and the kind of strong character I have developed as a result... I think that this essay is the reason I got in, in fact.

Out of the schools that I applied to, I was denied at Rice, Harvard, Vanderbilt. Wesleyan, Cornell, Brown, Tulane, WUSTL, University of Chicago, and Notre Dame
I was accepted at: UT Austin, USC, Boston College, BU, NYU, Polytech NYU, Tufts, Kentucky, Alabama, Santa Clara and Rochester

Therefore when I got an email that Middlebury notifications would come out today, I didn't think I had a shot in Hell. I fully expected to be denied just like I was at all the comparable schools I applied to. However much to my surprise, I pulled up the link and found that I had been accepted. I started screaming. Now, I am in the process of registering for the admitted student days and finishing my financial aid application.

Thus if you want to go to Middlebury.... EVEN IN THE SLIGHTEST... just apply.
Just like me, you could be surprised by the result.

Best wishes to all.

^ wat are u talking about 2180 and that is not good enough? You must be mad! I got in with 1900~ sth… JESUS CHRIST IM FREAKING OUT I cant stop smiling. half of me says I dont deserve to get accepted and the other half is just wondering, IS MIDDLEBURY lowering their standards? Regardless, congratz…

LOL I’m just so used to hearing people talk about these kinds of schools saying “2300+” that I just don’t feel it is exceptional…

BUT YEAH, I’M FREAKING OUT RIGHT NOW
Congrats to you too!

^^^Coolkh–you make it sound like it’s a miracle you got in.

According to another thread, your SAT II scores were 700 math, 750 physics, and 760 chemistry. Those scores are well within Midd’s ranges. One of the great things about Midd is that you can submit 3 SAT IIs instead of your SAT I. Sounds like that worked out in your favor. Congrats!

@ Coolkh

Sats are only part of the puzzle for adcoms. Most students with enough training and practice and effort can get high SAT scores which is why they are only a portion of the picture. A “1900” doesn’t mean you are incapable of handling the workload at a top LAC nor does it mean you are not worthy. You obviously had more to offer the school than just “cookie cutter,” test performances. Enjoy your acceptance and be confident and if you feel you can do more than find a passion there and do more! congratz!

Wow, thz alot. I bet I’m gonna c alot of great ppl there!

Just do me a favor… send in your thanks but no thanks to Santa Clara… my younger D is on the wait list there! :)

All kidding aside; Congrats. And don’t undervalue your ability to get in. Be a confident student! Obviously, you bring a lot of things to the table that Midd thought were awesome. Enjoy!

Wavylays, CONGRATS! Sounds like you absolutely deserve admission and will be a great part of the Midd community.

I’m confused by something you wrote - you said you’re just now finishing your financial aid application?

My D, who was accepted and is dying to go to Middlebury, immediately clicked on her Fin. Aid link this morning to find an offer of a small loan, but no grants or scholarship.

The $58,950 pricetag of Midd puts it out of the running for us, especially because she got in to UCLA with a generous grant, making it about 40k more per year for her to go to Middlebury.

I feel like she’d be happier at Middlebury, but we just can’t justify going in to $160,000 in debt over 4 years for her to have a Midd bachelor’s degree, as much as we know it would be an amazing experience for her.

Your statement about just now filling out a financial aid app makes me feel like maybe we’re leaving some stone unturned…is there another financial aid application that now should be filled out? We turned in our FAFSA and CSS previously.

Thanks for any insight, and again, CONGRATULATIONS on your acceptance. You certainly deserve to be there…enjoy!

^ I turned in my FAFSA and profile months ago…
I didn’t expect to get in though, so I just recently sent off my documents for IDOC, and I have to finish my non-custodial parent waiver petition

Ah, okay, thanks. Just curious, did they indicate you would be given aid even without having received your IDOC?

Wow yeah… I’d say your SAT2s are good

I guess I’ll see you there heintzs? lol

I’ll be considered for aid once they process all my documents… I just really hope that they process it all before May! (i’m pretty sure that they will though and everything will turn out fine)
