You guys have me really nervous

All of the people posting these "Chance Me" posts have better stats than I do and yet people are still saying "it's a reach." Are you just saying that to be irritating or are you being serious? I know UMD is a competitive school but you don't have to be a genius to get in either. My friend has a buddy that had not so good grades or SAT scores and still got in.

1200 isn’t a genius SAT score.

You need to understand the economy to understand why UMDCPis becoming increasingly harder to get into with each passing yr.

Kids who have the scores to get into a higher tier university are attending UMDCP because of the costs associated with college. Yrs ago when the economy was great and unemployment was at 5%, they probably didn’t apply to UMDCP, but now with @10% unemployment, foreclosures at 15%, and the Dow still below July 2008, they are applying at a higher %.

UMDCP has limited spots, regardless of the economy, they still only take X amt. All of the sudden those kids who would have used UMDCP as a safety are now matriculating. That means their stats increase.

Additionally, OOS students see the selectivity rate increase and apply because the college looks better on paper. Only 25-30% come from OOS. The more that get rejected, the more selective they look…the more selective, the more apply…see the upward trend?

Finally, where is this buddy from? What is their background? Stats are not the only thing they take into consideration…is he URM, is he from AK?

Honestly, if you are from NJ/NY/CT you have a better chance of getting into your state school than UMDCP. If you are from NC you have a better chance of getting into UMDCP than UNCCH or NCST. OOS really comes down to the state.

@2school4school people are saying a 1600 is great. I’d love to have a 1600 on my SAT’s. That’s great to me. National average is 1500.

@bulletandpima I guess I can understand that. I don’t know the guys stats exactly but if he hung around my friend, he can’t be to smart. I know that he’s from MD and he’s white. My friend said he got in on personality…

I was admitted for Spring '10, here are my stats roughly:

SAT: 1930
GPA: Had mainly Bs, so I guess like a 3.2 or something
APs: Took APUSH and AP English Lit exams, took AP Enviro Sci but not the exam
ECs: Did tech theater for four years

There are a LOT of bright kids at UMD, but remember that the kind of kids who go to this website are generally the kids with really good grades, SAT scores, and that high achiever or overachiever attitude.

My stats are similar to yours but my G.P.A. is higher, my SAT score is a lot lower, and I took/am taking different AP classes. I’d have to say I definitely have the “overachiever” attitude.

You have to remember not only for OOS, but IS, stats will vary too. They are not going to want every UMDCP kid to be from Montgomery County. They want diversity among the state too. Thus, again, it needs to be viewed from the bigger picture.

In NoVA it is much harder for kids to get into VT than it would be for the kids coming from Emporia, VA. The main reason why is due to the academic level of the school system and the high demand of kids wanting to attend. In Fairfax the median SAT score is 1360 out of 1600…median. That mean’s if you score a 1300 you are below avg. Now compare that to a another county in VA with a 1250 Median. There are not going to take every student from only NoVA based on stats. This is a state college just like UMDCP.

Just because one person with certain stats gets in does not mean this is the norm for all applicants. Go to naviance and look at your school, that is where you truly are going to get the best results.

Anything you do, do not take UMD’s offer for freshman connection. You have been warned. Unless the only other option is Montgomery college or boring UMBC. Do not do Freshman connection.

What is so bad about Freshman connection? Inform please?

Or better yet, what is freshman connection?

Freshman connection is for spring admitted students. Those students will take classes (mostly CORE classes) in the evening hours so they’re on track to graduate. Freshman conection has weird hours (i.e. class ends at like 8-9pm) so its not very friendly to students, who have to commute because spring students are not given on-campus housing.

Yeah I wouldn’t do that anyway.

Connection students are allowed to move on campus come spring semester.

During the fall they attend classes from 3 pm +. There are specific apts that rent to them right off of campus. They can attend football games just like the traditional admit.

To clarify: You don’t need to be in freshman connection to get housing as a Spring Admit. One of my friends was admitted for spring, passed on freshman connection and lived at home while going to AACC. She still got housing (in an Ellicott double no less)
