YoungArts 2018-2019

I agree. I would put that as the best bet. Fingers crossed for then!

Hey guys, hate to be the Debbie Downer here (insert sad trombone music lol) but last year results were released on November 29th. The year before that, 2016, they released the winners list on the 16th but they also didn’t call any of the Finalists so I’m not sure if that correlates. I think if they call Finalists it’ll start today and calls will go out all week so watch this thread and others to see if anyone posts that they got a call. Good luck to everyone! And also to quote @Lunarlitgend

I would say this is true but also that the winners are an exceptionally talented bunch. I think it’s more important to note that MANY kids that aren’t selected are also exceptionally talented and should not despair if they aren’t selected. Case and point, my D won in jazz voice in 2016 (her college major and on a giant scholarship for it in NYC), submitted what I thought were FAR better videos in jazz voice in 2017 and not as good vids in Pop voice and won HM in Pop voice and got zilch in jazz voice so for whatever reason, that judge didn’t love her jazz vids. But her college certainly did and she is doing very well there so don’t let it ruffle your feathers if you don’t make the list.

@SpartanDrew Ohh okay. No it’s fine you’re not a Debby Downer, thank you for informing us ^_^!!

i just saw this girl on facebook post, on nov. 9, that shes excited to be heading back to miami for youngarts to be considered for the US presidential scholar award.

i feel like its safe to say that calls may have already gone out.

No that’s a totally different thing. I doubt very much that she got a call. She is likely a winner from last year for something but it’s possible calls are starting to go out. Where was the facebook post? On Youngarts page?

I just found it. She was a 2017 Finalist and is now being considered for a US Presidential Scholarship. That has nothing to do with this year’s winners list.

“I am so excited to be headed to Miami and back to YoungArts to be considered for nomination toward the US Presidential Scholar in the Arts award! I was recognized as a “2017 Ballet Winner Finalist” and now as a Senior in high school I am eligible to apply to be considered for the award!”

ahhh i see now. had me worried for a sec. lol.

While I agree that all the winners are talented, I find that YA certainly has a type for poetry winners. All the poets that preform during YA National Week, it’s very clear that YA values heavy imagery, metaphors, and analogies. And they also seem to be drawn towards poetry with a certain type of narrative or theme. This doesn’t give me much confidence towards my poetry being considered for an award of any type. I just hope they diversify their selections this year.

Yup I totally get it. That was exactly the case with my daughter and jazz last year. I think her style is not at all in the mainstream jazz sounding vocals and has more of a neosoul sound to her. Which is likely why she won for Pop voice.

@glamourbiscuit @SpartanDrew
Yeah, I noticed that too and it hurts me to be honest. The point of art is to welcome a diverse range of talent and perspective. Rather than going with a theme and shutting out multiple works that show different personal visions and voices. I don’t know, it’s just my two cents which is what I meant by, yes the winners are absolutely talented but it doesn’t mean that those who weren’t chosen aren’t as talented. The winners just happen to have what YoungArts was looking for which could’ve been something a person who didn’t win could’ve easily done themselves but rather went down a different path with their work.
It’s almost a crapshoot if you think about it—an element of luck if you’re fortunate to have that ‘theme’ YoungArts wants.
Hence, I say the results should be taken with a grain of salt. But, don’t get me wrong. Still being a YoungArts winner is an absolutely honor and shouldn’t be disregarded :smiley:

I totally agree. But it’s important as an artist to develop thick skin. Not everyone will like your style or voice. My D has learned this and handles it well which is great. She was unfazed that she didn’t win in her chosen discipline last year. And she could absolutely come up with a goose egg this year. You just never know. But it doesn’t diminish her talent and career aspirations and it shouldn’t for all of you talented kids either. Honestly I think the vast majority of kids who even apply are uber talented or they wouldn’t even put themselves out there in a competition like this. So Congrats in advance to ALL of you for just applying! It’s a lot of work!

@SpartanDrew That is very true. As artists we will face constant rejection and not everyone will like our work, you’re absolutely right xD
It’s inevitable, if not now then we’ll get rejected later on.

HarryPotterSeries

I guess that’s what makes as artists so strong. :slight_smile:

@SpartanDrew @Lunarlitgend I absolutely agree! It’s important to develop thick skin, and I think more and more Young Artists are developing thick skin because of social social media- I know I have! I’ve been posting my art on social media ever since I was 11 and I’ve gotten my fair share of harsh criticism. So rejection from YA isn’t really a worry for me, I find that rejection on social media is far worse cause it happens publicly haha!

The poetry YA picks is interesting to me because when listening to them, I can’t imagine a teenager/young adult writing/processing words in this way. The poetry they write is obviously beautiful and descriptive, but I’m getting the feeling that to YA, the more “mature” it is, the better it is. Or the more it uses complex word choice, the more “sophisticated” it is for the competition.

Sorry for going off on a tangent!

@glamourbiscuit no dude it’s alright! And I couldn’t agree more with what you said :smiley:

@Lunarlitgend :heart::heart:

Literally so nervous for this week, I submitted for the visual arts category and I’m just praying i make it as a finalist or at least some category. I’m just nervous about my portfolio submissions, do the judges in this category like personal work or controversial topics. I’ve worked all summer on my submissions making them very personal, but I’m kind of starting to feel like that doing this was kind of a lost cause, also coming from a public school were not taught very much in my art classes, even in IB art. Does Youngarts like to see self-taught artists apply. :-S :frowning: Just hoping for the best and for that call or email :)]

I applied for short story both this year and last year. Last year I didn’t win anything, but I received an email from Youngarts in March telling me that my stories had made it to the final round of adjunction and review last year! They also provided me with some helpful feedback. I’m so nervous for the results this year omg omg!!

Hi @Razor123! I completely understand how you’re feeling. I applied to short story (like @liliunicorn by the way CONGRATS DUDE! I HOPE YOU MAKE IT THIS YEAR :D) and I started in June and worked super hard on my stories. I don’t like to give too myself too much credit because we all worked super hard when applying to YoungArts. I’d like to assume the judges prefer both kinds of works. Personal and/or Controversial. Of course I know absolutely nothing about Visual Arts so my advice probably isn’t the most reliable but that’s what I think. But I know for sure that YoungArts probably does greatly appreciate self-made artists. My writing program is nothing in my school, it’s just art. So I had to work on my own too. And I’m positive they have alumni out there who had to work on there own without any help from a professional tutor or attending an art school, same goes for U.S Presidential Scholars. You put in a lot of effort and I’m sure it’ll show one way or another, even if it’s not through YoungArts :slight_smile:

@Lunarlitgend ahh thanks:) Best of luck to you this year!

@liliunicorn That’s amazing! Congrats! I hope they are able to provide feedback for everyone this year as well! :smiley: Even if I don’t make it, I would love to have feedback from the panels/YA! :slight_smile:

@Razor123 I understand! I went to a public high school and I’m going to a community college. So help for anything outside of class itself is pretty much zero. In fact, a lot of teachers don’t care about competitions like YA or they feel bothered if you ask them for a signature for something like Scholastics. It’s crazy! So don’t feel bad if you don’t get in cause a lot of these finalists and winners come from prestigious private art schools. It’s very hard to win competitions like these without help :frowning:

@glamourbiscuit @Razor123 …but it’s definitely not impossible :wink:
