YoungArts 2018-2019

@Lunarlitgend Exactly! :smiley:

Also, Good luck everybody! Tomorrow is hopefully the day when they start giving out calls! :slight_smile: if you get a call, let everyone know here :slight_smile:

Hi! Long time lurker on this thread posting for the first time.

My daughter applied in poetry. Her stuff is very experimental and strange. I have no idea how that will play out. I am going to have to hope there is someone on the judging panel who will think ā€œThis is really strange and interesting. I would like to meet the person who wrote this!ā€ or ā€œThis person is willing to take big risks with her art. She would really benefit from YA week.ā€

I have no idea what the YA judging panelā€™s aesthetic is like. I hope they are open to a range of techniques and styles! It would mean the world to my daughter to get the opportunity to study with master teachers. But I know this competition is HIGHLY selective so we will see.

@liliunicorn , thatā€™s so cool that you got feedback!

Best wishes to everyone!

@BookLvr best of luck to your daughter! I think every competition is different and one judge may love your kidā€™s stuff and the next not so much so take it with a grain of salt. Iā€™d forgotten to mention that despite my D being passed over last year on her chosen discipline of jazz voice for YA, she won a Downbeat magazine student music award in jazz voice and tied for ā€œoutstanding performanceā€ for Downbeat with a jazz vocalist who was named a YA Finalist last year! Different competition, different judges, different result, some audio recordings submitted. Downbeat is probably just as elite (maybe more) for the jazz world as YA so itā€™s all relative and subjective. This is just one competition and does not define anyone whether they win or lose. Just putting your art out there is an enormous accomplishment on itā€™s own!

Hoping for either calls this week or better yet the winnerā€™s list!

Does anybody know if calls in the morning or a night? :)] :-/

Yeah, its crazy how some of these teachers in school districtā€™s donā€™t notify students about stuff like this, thank god Instagram exists or else i wouldnā€™t have been finding out about competitions like these. My school is more forwarded to sports and athletics and very few students find art,writing, or music interesting, we even had our art honor society taken away :(( hope sooner or later teachers spread the word to more highschool students so they can achieve bigger things. @glamourbiscuit

I think afternoon and evening when theyā€™ve called in the pastā€¦and I agree on the high school arts things. A LOT of the kids who win are from PAHS but certainly not all of them. My Dā€™s HS has no clue about YA and really didnā€™t even care much. They only care about their own competitions which are classical based and nothing my D was interested in so they were zero help for her. She was on her own.

its a shame really :frowning: , hopefully this may change soon and give creative students a chance :x @SpartanDrew

who Youngarts? I think they give a LOT of creative students a chance. If you look at past winnerā€™s lists many of those kids are from public high schools and even home schooled. I donā€™t think they earmark the performing arts schoolā€™s kids for stuff but those kids have an edge because thatā€™s what they study all day every day.

no i just meant the students in certain schools who donā€™t get notified by teachers as much about competitions in certain districts @SpartanDrew

Has anyone been notified yet? Or know when the notifications will begin?

@lrg1122 Iā€™ve been wondering that too! I think we all have haha! :slight_smile: Hopefully it starts today and at least one of us gets a lucky call!

I thought i got a call but idk if it was a telemarketer trying to scam me or not because i usually get thoseā€¦i missed the call during my class, tried calling back and it wont pick back upā€¦Iā€™m shaking and so nervous right now :-S

@Razor123
Was it this number?
ā€(305) 377-1149ā€¬?
Because thatā€™s the official YoungArts number. If not, then yeah itā€™s probably a telemarketer

yep nvm it was a telemarketer the number was 800-945-0258ā€¦whoopsā€¦i was so franticā€¦im dumb lol XD :open_mouth: @Lunarlitgend

@Razor123 LOL no itā€™s okay! Thatā€™s an honest mistake especially because of how nerve-racking this is. Iā€™ve read about people in past forums diving for their phones only to be met with a telemarketer, despite knowing the official YoungArts number xD

Iā€™m just praying at this point lolā€¦i held my breath for what seems like a good 5 minutesā€¦even if this doesnā€™t really work out ill just rework and try again next year :x :slight_smile: @Lunarlitgend

@Razor123 Yeah I agree. Just go into it hoping for the best but expecting the worst. It sounds like such an irony but itā€™s better that way. So if you donā€™t make it, itā€™s not as disappointing :slight_smile:

Im honestly hoping the law of attraction works with this XD! Im just glad i built the guts to do this i usually donā€™t do competitions cause i get so nervousā€¦but anywaysā€¦ Im sending you love and joy and i hope that you and other applicants make it in. Good Luck! @Lunarlitgend :x rooting for yā€™all

I donā€™t remember which phone number I gave them, my sonā€™s or mine. Is there a way to find out who they are going to call?

@Razor123 You too :slight_smile:
