YoungArts 2019

One year they sent my daughter a merit notice, which was fine. But then her teacher got an email congratulating her on being the teacher of a finalist (this was not my musician daughter; it was a different daughter, applying in theater.) The teacher was over the moon, but the email had been sent out to her by mistake. Oopsie!

Oh my gosh @glassharmonica - that’s horrible! They don’t sound super organized so I guess it’s possible they stagger notices but it seems unlikely they would be this spread out. My daughter’s email (sent Nov. 14th at 3:20pm) notifying her of winning Honorable Mention in Popular Voice says:

“To sign up for possible inclusion to the NY program, you must submit your request by Wednesday, November 21, 2018 by clicking on the following link: NY Sign Up. Acceptance into the program is based off of your geographical location and discipline/category. Determinations will be made by November 29 and you will be notified of your status via email.”

So it doesn’t sound fair if they are still notifying winners who would be responding much later than others (to an event with very limited space) which would demand an immediate RSVP to even meet the deadline.

Having said that, I suppose anything is possible. I really hope more winners are notified. I am aware of several very talented candidates who have not received an email yet which is shocking. If such high caliber candidates don’t end up getting awards this year, it speaks to the level of competition out there and goes back to what @SpartanDrew has stressed about just not knowing what they are looking for from year to year. My daughter was honestly not expecting an award because she was well aware that they choose less than 10% of applicants and there are typically 7,000-10,000 who apply (according to the YoungArts website.) It didn’t help that she scrambled to get everything in at the last minute and felt her video quality could have been better with more prep time. She obviously works very hard to stand out and is a very passionate musician, but she feels extremely lucky knowing she was recognized amongst the amazing pool of candidates who apply. She’s still pinching herself and now just praying she is chosen for the regional program.

Good luck to anyone still waiting to hear and please post here if you get an email or more information.

Happy Thanksgiving to all!

Did anyone else get that email from Cornish that they were a finalist? I’m so upset that it turned out to be an error, I had my whole class applauding and screaming >.<

Yes, unfortunately

What a crazy day. So check out this random turn of events.

My D, along with a whole mess of other folks, got that email today from Cornish, congratulating her on being a finalist. Which, to be clear, was very confusing since she hadn’t been told she was a winner of any kind. We assumed it was an error. And it was. Because they recalled the email twenty minutes later.
And then YoungArts posted on twitter that they still aren’t done contacting people and not to listen to other people.
So par for the course, lots of confusion lol.

But then on a whim, prompted by the bogus mail from Cornish, I went and looked in her spam folder on Gmail.
And turns out she actually won a merit award. The email was sent last Wednesday afternoon, same as everyone else.

I swear we checked in there last week when people were talking about spam.
But I realize now we were looking in deleted or trash or something else.
You have to scroll down to even see the spam folder.

So we just clicked to sign up for the regional event in NYC, but I don’t have high hopes because we just registered almost a week late. We sent an email explaining, but will see if that helps.

Anyway, I know I must have read 20 people post about checking the spam folder. And I’m a very tech savvy guy.
But somehow we still missed this. So seriously, go check again.

So how’s that for a crazy turn of events.
The only way we found out she won merit is because we got a bogus mail from Cornish saying she won and that made us check again. What a world. So go check.

Going to be so frustrating if she can’t go to the event because of this.
But at least she can include on her college apps.

That’s insane @DrummerDad18

My daughter was nominated for HM and did get the email from Cornish today. She was confused that it said “congrats on being a finalist” but figured it was a typo. Cornish should probably hold off on emails like that until the official notice comes out to avoid this confusion. Then again, it helped DrummerDad18 figure out the mystery and ended up producing great news from the spam box!

I’ve been checking my spam folder like crazy and still nothing, though. Maybe I just didn’t win anything… guess I’ll try again next year, persistence is key ??‍♀️

Congrats to your D @DrummerDad18!

My son got the email from Cornish, but nothing in the Spam folder. Does anyone know if the spam folder went to the entire YoungArts list, or only to students nominated for some type of award?

Wondering the same. Seems strange it would go to the entire group of applicants.

Got the same Cornish email today. JUST looked in my daughter’s Spam account, and she received Honorable Mention (Writing) on 11/14. Cannot make the Feb Miami regional bc it conflicts with school musical, so we emailed if she could do LA or NY. Anyone know the cost/benefit of regional program???

hey guys! congrats to everyone who already got the email! are there any writers that have been notified yet?

I think the question should be did any writers NOT receive the email from Cornish…

It is one thing if Cornish jumped the gun and sent out the email to a list of winners and another if they sent out the email to all participants…if it is the latter then they just managed to inflict all sorts of unnecessary joy, hope, dejection, and pain in 20 minutes to 10,000 kids…

@LabMom4131 YoungArts stated on their Twitter that the Cornish email was sent to ALL applicants. I thought the same thing, that they had a list of winners and got excited, but according to YoungArts that’s not the case.

You know, I’ve been getting really frustrated with how YoungArts is notifying winners. Why notify everyone differently, at different times, for so long, and before the results are released to the public? They should stop this nonsense and do it like the Scholastic Awards, where the results are out on one specific day and the DAY they come out is when you get the email that you won. That’s so much more efficient and easy, and it doesn’t discourage anyone while they’re waiting for the results.

So far all YoungArts has done is give me anxiety and stress acne :(( The Scholastic Awards, even though they didn’t give me any money for a gold medal, seems so much more organized and likable so far!

My D is a YA winner this year and didn’t get that email. But she is already in college so maybe that’s why. The whole thing is bizarre. I don’t understand why they have chosen this way to notify winners this year. It’s nuts.

@cherryboyy I don’t think YA specified on their twitter account that it went to everyone, that was just some random person surmising it did. In any case, I agree that the process is terrible. Scholastic does a much better job.

I didn’t see anything about it going to everyone. Has anyone tried tweeting Cornish College to see if they respond. Seems like they were totally irresponsible and have not tweeted an apology.

If you look on the “Tweets and Replies” page of their Twitter you can see that they replied to someone and said it was sent to all applicants. Wish I could link a picture but I can’t ??‍♀️

To be honest I’m not sure if I trust them saying that it got sent to everyone, but that may just be my attempts at staying hopeful and lying to myself ? Trying to get myself to stop checking my phone for an email or call, I’m just gonna check the official list when it comes out! After that Cornish email I don’t even trust the YoungArts Twitter.

Also, if anyone is in the same boat as me (90% sure you didn’t win anything) don’t worry. This contest is sooo competitive and subjective, and I’ve heard that the judges are basically looking for different things each year… There are other competitions out there and other chances to apply!

@cherryboyy

According to YA’s twitter page, under the “Tweets & Replies” section, that e-mail was unfortunately sent to everyone

Thanks, I see it now under Tweets & Replies. Bummer. I guess since we haven’t received an email yet, we are not finalists
