Your Good Buy Of The Day (Part 1)

Needed to get a graduation gift. Got 15% off at Neimans for letting them send emails plus 15% rebate on ebates.

If anyone still enjoys hard copy magazines, Amazon has several popular ones for $5/year. Just ordered Real Simple for myself and D and DIL. Many other magazines are the same price including, Bon Appetit, Southern Living, Good Housekeeping, Menā€™s Health, etc.

It says ā€œlimited time onlyā€ but Iā€™m not sure how long that is!!

@abasket do you know if those subscriptions auto-renew?

They are set up for auto renew BUT it was stated that you will receive an email 30 days before auto renew to change your subscription.

This is the text you see prior to purchasing:
ā€œIf you purchase the auto-renewing offer, your subscription will renew at the end of the current term. Before it renews, we will send you a reminder notice stating the term and rate then in effect. Cancel anytime.ā€

^^ I believe you can go into ā€œManage Subscriptionsā€ and turn auto-renew off if you donā€™t want to wait for the 30-day reminder. I have successfully done this in the past. If I remember correctly, it takes a little while (14-30 days??) to gain access to this.

CVS has had 90% off their Easter decorations this week - whatever is left. But some stores have had Pet Central pet supplies also marked down 90% off - I used a bunch of coupons and got a large pile of brand new pet dishes, pet blankets, toys and tunnels, and brought them over to the local humane society. They told me they will share them with people who adopt a pet, or with the foster families.

@doschicos thanks. I wouldnā€™t buy it but for free Iā€™ll give it a shot.

@doschicos thanks for the heads up! I downloaded it. Havenā€™t read any of her books, but since itā€™s free I couldnā€™t pass it up.

This book is more a compilation of advice/quotes from other people that she has admired over the years. Havenā€™t read it myself but since it is free, itā€™s worth passing along.

Oprah gave the commencement address at Colorado College today and she gave a copy of that book to all the grads.

Well she sure got upstaged by Robert F Smithā€™s graduation gift to the grads at his commencement address at Morehouse!! Paying off their student loans with $4M tops a free copy of oneā€™s own book

Just reading this now and itā€™s after 11 in CAā€¦too late for me. Itā€™s $14.99. Nice for whoever was able to get a free copy.

For anyone living in warmer climates and moving to colder ones for college/otherwise:
Columbia factory outlets had these for a great 40 bucks. Have no idea how long theyā€™ll last though.

Those boots are now ā€œon saleā€ for $105!

Side note: On Oprahā€™s Instagram page she had a photo of herself with one of the excited graduates at Colorado College - someone in the comments said she should have done as Robert Smith did in paying off the $4M in loans.

She was quick to answer that she has to date given $13M in college scholarships (!!!) and put over 400 men through Morehouse. Way to go Oprah.

This may not be current (its from 2017) but it lists the 14 members of Gatesā€™/Buffetā€™s giving fund. Many unfamiliar names. Robert Smith is one of them Oprah is not. The members promise to give away at least half of their wealth to philanthropic causes.

I admit I chuckled at the name of one of the members (well a couple) Iza and Sami Login. Wonder if they get royalties every time someone uses the term that is their last name  (jk). https://www.cnbc.com/2017/05/31/14-billionaires-signed-bill-gates-and-warren-buffetts-giving-pledge.html

And before anyone jumps, yes we know Oprah is vey generous.

@abasket Oprah attended my Dā€™s graduation Saturday, sat on the end seat of the VIP row just 5 feet from my seat in the handicapped section (for Dad). Apparently one of her students from the South Africa school she opened graduated in this class and she was there for her. There were others seated with her that appeared to be family members of the student as well. She was the guest speaker for Skidmore College in 2017 when two other of that schoolsā€™ students graduated. And yes, I wish she done as Robert Smith did LOL

She had a South African student (on scholarship) at CC, too. To be fair, yearly COA at CC is close to $75k so most of the debt would be parent loans, not student loans and most of the students could have made a choice to lessen their debt by going to school at a cheaper option. CC students arenā€™t typically from poor households. Mr. Smith was incredibly generous, and probably helped many who had no choice but to take on debt. Iā€™m speaking in general terms, Iā€™m sure there are exceptions to what I said at both schools.

Iā€™m glad I was able to get the book, but Iā€™m thinking a lot will be lost on my black and white kindle. I saw it at the bookstore and itā€™s a really pretty book.

Theyā€™re both generous. Smith with his donation this past weekend. And give Oprah credit for founding and continuing to support an entire school in South Africa. Both individuals are generous givers in many other ways. Huge respect for both!
