This isn’t a big sale item or anything (free shipping and a $10 gift card), but if you ladies are stumped for something your guy will actually wear, this is it.

I have my heavy duty winter parka which would keep me warm on Everest. It’s great for a big snow storm or when it’s wicked cold (teens) or when you are going to be outside for hours like skiing. But, it’s way too much jacket when the amount of time outside is the time it takes to get back and forth from the car. Too bulky to wear in a store. Just too much for a lot of occasions, even when it’s pretty cold out, especially if you are already wearing a turtleneck and a sweater or light fleece indoors as we do here in New England in the winter. But, it’s too darn cold to go out without a jacket, even if the car does warm up quick!

One alternative are the heavy fleece zip-up jackets. They are warm, but I’m not wild about the look and they aren’t wind proof or even the slightest bit water resistant. Wool navy pea coats are an alternative, but again – bulky and not even the slightest bit moisture resistant. It doesn’t take much moisture to make a wool pea coat weigh 100 pounds and smell like a wet dog.

I just got the ideal solution, $60 from LL Bean:

[Warm-Up Jacket: Casual Jackets at L.L.Bean](<a href=“Men's Warm-Up Jacket, Fleece-Lined | Casual Jackets at L.L.Bean”>Men's Warm-Up Jacket, Fleece-Lined | Casual Jackets at L.L.Bean)

It’s a water resistant nylon shell. I wouldn’t wear it in a monsoon, but it’s wind and water repellent enough for a little rain or snow. Everything but the sleeves is lined with a heavy gray polyester fleece, so it’s warm enough, even before the car heater warms up. The sleeves are insulated with “Thinsulate”, like a very thin layer of synthestic down. Not bulky, but warm enough. Elastic ribbed cuffs at the hem and sleeves. Two outside zipper pocket and one inside zipper breast pocket, perfect for a phone or iPod. Available in a choice of colors. No bulky hood, but enough of a collar to provide a little protection and, most of the time, I’d rather not have the hood if I’m wearing a winter beanie. No gaudy ski jacket color schemes. Not bulky.

I can already tell that this will be my grab it and go jacket 95% of the time from November through March, here in New England. In sunbelt climates, it might be all the winter jacket you need. Sorry for the ad, but this is a piece of clothing that I suspect a lot of your guys would end up wearing for years and not the sort of thing that is easy to find in stores these days, as you can see [url=<a href=“http://www.kohls.com/kohlsStore/mens/brandsformen/chaps/outerwear.jsp?ENDECA_SEARCH_INPUT<>Ne=&ENDECA_SEARCH_INPUT<>No=0&ENDECA_SEARCH_INPUT<>Ns=p_Product_Total_Inventory|1&ENDECA_SEARCH_INPUT<>Ntt=&ENDECA_SEARCH_INPUT<>recs=24&ENDECA_SEARCH_INPUT<>N=4294961693&ENDECA_SEARCH_INPUT<>type=2&PRODUCT<>prd_id=845524892664256&FOLDER<>folder_id=2534374752659100&bmForm=guided_nav_search&bmFormID=1291398052396&bmUID=1291398052396]here[/url”>http://www.kohls.com/kohlsStore/mens/brandsformen/chaps/outerwear.jsp?ENDECA_SEARCH_INPUT<>Ne=&ENDECA_SEARCH_INPUT<>No=0&ENDECA_SEARCH_INPUT<>Ns=p_Product_Total_Inventory|1&ENDECA_SEARCH_INPUT<>Ntt=&ENDECA_SEARCH_INPUT<>recs=24&ENDECA_SEARCH_INPUT<>N=4294961693&ENDECA_SEARCH_INPUT<>type=2&PRODUCT<>prd_id=845524892664256&FOLDER<>folder_id=2534374752659100&bmForm=guided_nav_search&bmFormID=1291398052396&bmUID=1291398052396]here[/url].

I bought my usual size and it’s trim over a turtleneck and light fleece pullover. If you are borderline on size or like a big loose jacket, consider the next size up. A LARGE is supposed to fit men with a 42 - 44 suit coat chest size. I’m a 42 and the jacket fits me perfectly. I’d say it would be the right size for a 40 - 42 chest. I’d say go with the tall version at 6 feet or above or if you want a jacket that goes below the waist (extra 1" of sleeve length and 2" of overall length)
