So for those of us that like to look good and still have a couple of dollars left in the bank account, when is the best time to go shopping? I want to get some new clothes before college starts - some jeans, long sleeved shirts, etc. are there any holidays or big sales coming up in august? any ideas?

Walmart's The Name......

Tax Fee Weekend is coming up if you live in North Carolina!! I like to shop in places like TJ Maxx, Marshall's, Ross, etc...they have a lot of crap, but if you're willing to comb through the racks, you can find some great deals.

Anyone know when tax free week is in nyc? did i miss it? lol

Haha, I don't know how widespread the Tax Free Weekend thing is...the legislature here in NC enacted it in 2002 as kind of a "reward" to taxpayers (or a way to get the attention off of their latest screw ups, take your pick ;). It sure is great for back to school shopping though!

I don't know if there is a Filene's Basement up where any of y'alls live, but they have awesome clothes at amazing prices. They buy what other stores can't sell. You have from super high end designer clothes (like Prada, Gucci) down to the most low level brands you can think of. The prices start at about 50% off normal prices (what you would pay if you bought it the day it came out). Not to mention, the discounts you get depending on how long the particular piece has been on the racks for. Best deal in town. Also, there is an Urban Outfitters where I live that has a clearance basement (it's the only one that I have ever seen with such a thing) with prices at like 50-75% regular retail prices. It's what the other Urban stores can't sell or is leftover from their season. Plus if you pair up the pieces with a few things from what is now "in" then you can develop some pretty hip, edgy, and unique looks.

ha, I agree Filene's Basement is awesome, but I've only seen them in Boston.
Anywhere that you can find clearance is great. I got two pairs of pants from Gap for less than $30. You just gotta look before all the good stuff is gone!

anyone know what the hell tax fee weekend is?

if ur in nyc go shopping on jamaica avenue in queens around 165th street. u never pay tax there unless u use a credit card.

Well, if you look at the words, it sounds like a weekend where they dont charge sales tax (at least on clothing).

OR you could just come to minnesota where we dont charge sales tax on clothing because its considered a necissity (like unprepared food).

Lol, you know I never really noticed that? How sad is that? I need to pay attention more...

Yeah, they don't charge sales tax on clothes, many electronics (such as computer), school supplies, etc. for one weekend, historically the first weekend in August...you can't go buy a car with no sales tax, but you can get pretty much anything else that you would need for school.

Thought the concept was pretty self explanatory, but I guess not.

PS: Think I'll be planning a shopping trip to Minnesota sometime soon (though it's pretty far away from NC)!

Tax free week in NYC is right after labor day in time for back to school shopping.

Right now all of the summer stuff is on sales (50 to 70% off at lord & taylors, bloomingdales and macy's) as the fall clothes come out.

what kind of stuff are you looking to get. Have you ever gone to the outlets Tangers in riverhead or woodbury commons.

I know a few weeks ago the lacoste store in soho had a sale 30 to 30% off. You can go anywhere in NYC, to get clothes, harlem, downtown bklyn, jamaica ave, century 21 and the downtown manhattan stores, there is a filenes basement in union square, syms (on trinty )

Well, we also have the mall of america in MN (and its right by the airport...you dont even have to actually come into minneapolis though I woudl reccomend it). Its got pretty much anything you could ever want...tax free.

go to ross and tj maxx, they have polo, abercrombie, and all the other brands you'd want. also, if you can find a plato's closet in your area..they always have nice clothes w/ good brands (AND they'll buy your old clothes ffrom you for cash!).

duhh..Goodwill and Salvation Army

1) Goodwill-My classmate went in and bought Sevens jeans (macy's brand jeans, go up to 150 per pair) for less than 20 bucks. then she went to go see that one hilary duff movie, and she had the exact same pair
2) Goodwill- I got a perfect-condition London Fog women's trenchcoat, pressed, unwrinkled, un-stained for 14.99.
3) Salvation Army- Abercrombie and Fitch button down for 7 dollars
4) local second-hand clothing store- soft, cashmere-like (the label says rabbit/cotton) sweater from American Eagle for $1.

countless, countless bargains. i love getting hats, purses, and ties, too.

i dunno if its just me being weird or shallow or a mixture of both , but i dont buy second hand clothes (but there is nothing wrong with it). I'd rather get the hook up (know somebody who works in the store and use their discount)

My home state is always sales and income tax free, fortunately. If you want cheap, Wal-Mart is your best bet I suppose.

Foley's always has huge sales every weekend. Aeropostale is always on sale, too.

Target is the best place to go!

Shirts,shoes,pants all cost 10 bux
