I just recently moved to a new area and started my first semester of CC before getting settled in. I had a job working full time to pay for my car and my other bills, and didn’t have enough time to focus on classes with my house being renovated and working long night shifts. I would over sleep and not go to my classes. Im constantly on the road as well, to visit my family (usually takes 2 hours there and back.) I did okay in the beginning but bombed the rest of the semester, 0.75 gpa. I know I messed up big time… I know now that I have to fix my priorities, put all my focus on school and take less hours at work. But will this first semester really be a big down fall, ruining my chances at transferring to a 4 year university ? I’m freaking out I hope that i can recover from this! I am willing to do anything to fix this, any advice to help???
Most community colleges allow you to re-take courses in which you earned low grades, and then use the new grades to replace the old grades. That should help fix your GPA. The low grades will still appear on your transcript though. If in fact all future semesters show much-improved grades, then you will need to be prepared to explain why your first semester represents an outlier. If you do well in all future semesters, you will be able to transfer to a university.
Thank you for your advice!
You should definitely re-take all of the courses you screwed up. It’ll be a real PITA but it’s pretty much the only way to fix up your GPA. I feel your pain because at 17 I graduated high school, at 18 I moved out of my parents house and started working to pay bills, and eventually dropped out because I just couldn’t handle it. I had a 1.105. I went back and re-took the courses I screwed up (as well as some more) and now, about 2 years later I have a 3.756!
You can do it!
Ah I know it can be pretty rough trying to do too many things at once, I’m glad that you went back and have a 3.75. Very inspiring! Thank you for the advice and boost of confidence !
No problem. I’m applying to transfer for fall 2017 so fingers crossed I get into a good b-school and I hope the same for you as well.
Also if you’re living on your own tell your family to leave you alone so you can do better in school lol.
Retake all classes that your cc allows you to retake. Don’t go visit your family as often, register with the tutoring center and go every week for each subject (whether you feel you need it or not, that’ll help you stay on track for an A), go to office hours every week with questions about the week’s lectures and exercises prepared.
