I'm a high school junior probably applying ED to Hopkins this fall. I was reading the application for '09 and noticed that near the $10 essay question there was an option to answer the question in some way "other than an essay on paper." I've read all the posts relating to the essay question (including the JHU magazine article with selected essays) but have yet to find anything different than an essay. I mean there have been many good ideas, and some poems/journals/slideshows but nothing totally off the wall. I enjoy video production and editing as a hobby, so would sending in a short film be acceptable? has anyone done something along those lines?

I know the question won't be the same next year but it seems they've had success with kids getting creative, so perhaps they'll have that "other medium" option next year with a different question. What are some creative things people have done with it? Thanks.

i sent in a photograph. i'm sure the short film idea would've been great as well- i do think they enjoy a bit of creativity to set you apart from all those essay writers.

When the admissions rep came to my school, she practically begged applicants to send in something other than an essay. They've been using the $10 question for something like 3 years now, and you can imagine how many "[coffee, tea, ice cream - insert food item here - ] with friends [and my friends are so important to me]" essays they've gotten.

I made a scrapbook... it worked, although my parents were shocked.
