100% IGETC Absolutely Required?

Hi Again,

I am planning to transfer to UCLA's Economics/Math major for Fall 2011. Here are my courses (you can skip this part and go to the bottom where my question is):

[FALL 2008/SPRING 2009]

Business Law

Logic & Critical Thinking

Argumentation & Debate

Forensic Debate

Introduction to Business

// I didn't do any course planning when I took these classes, so they're essentially junk electives.

[SUMMER 2009]

Korean I

Law & Society
*3. C++ Object Oriented Programming (examination by credit)
*4. Discrete Structures & Programming (examination by credit)
*5. Algorithms & Programming (examination by credit)

[FALL 2009]

Microeconomics

Macroeconomics

Pre-Calculus

Honors History I (to 1870)

[SPRING 2010]

Calculus I (differntiation)

Honors History II (1870+)

Honors Modern Philosophy (1550 - 1800)

Korean II

[SUMMER 2010]

Calculus II (integration)

General Chemistry (college level)

[FALL 2010]

Calculus III (vector/multi-variable)

Linear Algebra

Physics I (calculus-based mechanics)

Honors English I (composition)
**5. Korean (independent studies)

[SPRING 2011]

Differential Equations

Probability & Statistics (calculus-based)

Physics II (calculus-based E&M)

Honors English II
**5. Korean (independent studies)

Examination by credit means that I received a 'pass' grade (not taken for a letter grade)
** Independent studies means there is no official continuation of this class beyond the second semester, except by individually (or group) paced instruction by the teacher & self study (essentially the same information that would be covered in successive semesters, but not dictated by a university curriculum).

It is assumed that I will complete these courses according to this schedule and maintain my 3.8 GPA (I've met with virtually every instructor for these courses I will be taking in the future, started preparation for many of them - specifically physics/mathematics, and made sure that the courses are consistent with the school catalog for future semesters).

*In any case, my question is this:
*

In order to complete IGETC, I would need to take an additional two courses from I believe Area 3, humanities and arts (I only have Honors Modern Philosophy). Further, I would need to take a life science (anthropology, biology, etc.). I am not particularly interested in any of these subjects, and instead have chosen to take additional classes in physics, chemistry, Korean (seriously learning a foreign language), U.S. History (honors level) in addition to completing my major's prerequisites (Math/Econ @ UCLA) and all other IGETC requirements, excluding those already mentioned. Further, I have challenged some courses through examination by credit which are considered helpful for math/science majors (computer science courses) based on my previous knowledge (I passed all three exams and received 'P' grades).

Will these considerations override the lack of completion of IGETC requirements (my major actually specifically recommends IGETC on ASSIST.org)? I would reason that I have decided to take classes more appropriate to my major, and that U.S. History and foreign language in some sense constitutes humanities, and that taking calculus-based physics is preferable to introductory biology or anthropology...

Advice would be helpful - since all of our counselors are complete idiots at my school and give contradictory responses, I'm hoping I can get some better insight here!

Thanks ~

IGETC is not 100% required, but it helps. If you don’t complete it it basically means that you’ll have to take courses at UCLA to fulfill some lower division GE classes, which (I’ve been told) adds about a quarter worth of work.

Hmm…given my circumstances & choice of major though, is it still likely that UCLA will require me to take courses like music appreciation, art history, etc. & beginning biology? lol… :("

I mean, if this is the case, or not completing all of IGETC would be an issue at transferring (especially into an impacted major), then I would replace perhaps the calculus-based physics sequence with art/humanities courses…but I feel that in some sense, it’s a waste of time - that I would benefit far more from the physics (I’m aware it has nothing to do with my major, but it is interesting to me & it develops problem-solving skills that will be necessary in upper division mathematics/economics @ UCLA).

You’d still have to finish UCLA’s GEs then. There will be more options, but it will cost money, time, and may be potentially more difficult.

I suggest completing courses for the IGETC, or self-studying for an AP test that would count toward the IGETC.

Anthro is easy if you don’t like life sciences.

*AP exams may be used in either area regardless of where the certifying CCC’s discipline is
located.

Correct, even with your major you have to complete the GE requirements. I’m a history major but I still have to take a college level math.

if ur applying to ucla biz econ and u dont have ur IGETC completed, then you wont have to worry about taking GE classes at ucla because you wont get in

I agree with Eshug1. You aint getting into UCLA Math/Econ without IGETC. Econ is a highly selective major, and I think not finishing IGETC is probably worse than not finishing your pre-reqs, which at UCLA is usually a deal breaker.

LOL @ eshug1

I’m not interested in the least bit of Business/Economics - I’m talking about Mathematics/Economics - which is not impacted.

And I received a response from the math department at UCLA, which recommended IGETC, but said it was not required for admission - that for Math/Econ they put higher priority on completion of major preparation (prerequisites); particuarily the math - as opposed to Business/Econ which has fewer preparation requirements, and thus a greater focus is placed on IGETC.

Rpicton - you can still take AP exams after graduating from high school?

I believe so.

You would take it at the closest high school the offers the exam. You’d take in in May 2010, and get the results in July 2010 so the timing would work. If you don’t pass or can’t take the test, it would give you Fall 2010 and Spring 2011 to just finish up at your CCC.

On the AP test, you would have to list (after getting permission from) the high school. You can send the scores to a college for free (a box to fill out on the actual exam on the test day), which, in this case, would be the college you want to certify your IGETC with.

Page 11, Section 7.1

The official IGETC Standards do not mention you have to complete it in high school.

I was wondering about this as well. Regardless of the IGETC certification, English and Math requirements must be completed at the JC or could you finish your GE at the UC?

So where would you put that on your UC app update? Isnt it too late?

What about the Berkeley update page?

@Wingspan

It really depends on your major and school if your applying for a very impacted major you will stand little chance without completion of IGETC

I’m referring to the AP score if you would take it in March and have the scores in June

Lookin, he’s planning on applying for Fall 2011. If he takes them this May he’ll have them the June before he applies.

If you have above a 3.5 GPA and have completed most of your pre-reqs, don’t worry about IGETC, you’ll get accepted for Math/Econ (math majors are always in desperate demand).

Now as a Math/Econ major myself, I STRONGLY recommend you take all your GE stuff and finish your IGETC at community college. Why? Because you don’t want to waste your time taking them when you are at UCLA. Especially when there are so many bomb math, econ, and math/econ classes offered. I personally am tremendously happy that I get to devote all my study time to things I truly find interesting/really help towards my major.

@Supa_Ramga
Can we know why math majors are in demand?

The difference is that if you get your IGETC certified before transfer, the 4-yr school WILL NOT require any more lower division classes. You will be a “certified transfer”. If you are an un-certified transfer you will likely have a different check list for UCLA GE’s like the IGETC and all those courses would have to be done (No CC really offers them all, so a few will be left). In my opinion it is the best option to certify.

"@Supa_Ramga
Can we know why math majors are in demand? "

Do you really have to ask that question?

so UCLA does not require 100% completion of the IGETC? Even for impacted majors such as poli sci or history?
