Hi I'm interested in going to a school in dominican republic for my junior year the school I will be going to will be us accredited but I'm wondering when I come back can I take my regents for my classes I took there such as chemistry11 and geometry , ss11 and english11 and I dont take my language regents till my senior year

It is not a matter of can you; you will have to take the required regents when you return in order to graduate.

You will need the US history regents in order to graduate.
If you have not taken the English regents, you will need the English regents in order to graduate.
There is no longer a foreign language regents (the exam is now called the LOTE).
Your will need the Geometry & Trig regents in order to graduate with an advanced regents diploma

Personally, I am not a fan of students taking the regents senior year because if you don’t pass, you don’t graduate.

Some other things to consider:

The English & the Math regents are transitioning to the common core effective June 2014. If you come back senior year, the exams that you will most likely be scheduled for the Regents Comprehensive Exam in English and the new English regents based on the common core along with 2 math regents.

If you are looking to get an advanced regents diploma, you will need the geometry and the AL2/trig regents (which you will be taking senior year)

There are also 3 new regents diplomas (effective June 2013) which is probably going to be a game changer for many students applying to selective colleges

Advanced Regents with mastery in math (same requirements as the advanced regents but you need an 85 on all 3 math regents)

Advanced Regents with mastery in science (same requirements as the advanced regents but you need an 85 on 3 science regents)

Advanced Regents with mastery in math and (same requirements as the advanced regents but you need an 85 on all 3 math regents and an 85 on 3 science regents)

College readiness and your ability to be accepted to a 4 year CUNY/SUNY currently means you must have at least a 75 on the ELA regents and an 80 on a math regents as there is no remediation at the 4 year college level (I expect these scores to increase by the time you graduate to align with the new diplomas)

By the time you come back senior year and apply to college, you won’t have these regents on your transcript, which could impede your ability to be admitted to a 4 year school (remember CUNY/SUNY are rolling admission; first come/first served).

The CUNY deadline is Feb 1 after which, they will not guarantee you a seat. You are going to be kissing the deadlines because it is very likely that your regents grades from the January regents (which you will have to take January senior year when you get back), most likely will not be posted.

While what you are doing is not so unusual(as I have seen a lot of kids go back and forth to DR and come back to school in NYC), the process has drastically changed and you have a lot riding on your decision.

I would recommend that you think long and hard (not so long because the new year starts in about a month) and weigh the pros and cons of leaving the country to attend school and then returning.

OP, why not ask your school’s guidance counselor?
